This sounds like one of those random ideas that children's authors think of that somehow take root.
And I bet the story is conventional with a predictable ending, too.
Dont try to find logic. It was a popular children's series of books. Kids just thought it was a cool premise.

BTW Emily E.sould have said,off topic, that other dogs of other breeds (boxer, bloodhound, great dane, st.bernard, newfie,etc.) are just as big as hers,only that as a lab retriever (and that type of dog in that shade DOES EXIST), he's, well, big for his breed.Saw it yesterday.loved the movie,too.

It’s all in fun and fantasy. And lends itself to a lot of humorous situations. I loved the books as a kid and am looking forward to seeing the movie.
