Lisa Fischer, my favorite.

Lisa Fischer was unknown to me until I watched this film. She has become my new favorite. She is the type I would love to have lunch with and just visit. What a great singing talent, and humble. She didn't seek stardom, she didn't want to put up with all that would come with it. And she knew it wasn't guaranteed anyway.

But overall one thing struck me. Many of those clearly excellent back-up singers seem to have an "entitlement" mentality. Especially the one who was with Michael Jackson when he died. It is a sort of "I am as good as anyone, better than most who are stars, so I deserve to be a star also." But the truth is the best singers don't always click with audiences. As Sting explained it in the film, it is an undefinable set of qualities that combine to result in any given person achieving stardom (my paraphrasing what he said). He didn't actually say it, but I was thinking he considered himself lucky, for he isn't a great vocalist but he has that "something" that clicked with fans.

Making a living as a singer is just entertainment. No one is owed stardom, no matter how good they are.

I agree. Not only does Lisa have an amazing voice, she also has a beautiful spirit. She seems very humble and down to earth. I remember Lisa's solo single "How Can I Ease the Pain?" and knew that she sang background for Luther. However, I learned more about her in this film. I like all of the ladies featured in this film! Great movie!

Lisa has the best voice I've ever heard, I'm pretty sure.

The videos of her singing "Gimme Shelter" live onstage with the Stones are unbelievably good. You could see that the Stones were all really enjoying her performance, too.

Belting out "Rape, murder..." has a quality that is unbelievable.

The original woman who sang it on the record had the same quality but I haven't heard much else from her, so I think Lisa has to be my favorite.

Maybe you should watch the movie upon which you are commenting. Merry Clayton, who did the backing on the album cut of Gimmee Shelter is very prominent. She and Mick tell the story of the recording. Watch the F'in Movie

I first noticed Lisa Fischer in the early '90s singing backup with The Rolling Stones. When I think of backup singers she is one of the first to come to mind.
