Judith Hill

She is now competing on The Voice. I haven't seen this movie yet, how much time do they spend on her and her story?

reply

They are supposedly doing a segment about this documentary next Sunday (June 16th) on CBS Sunday Morning. It comes on 8:00 a.m./Central time where I live.

Not a lot of time is spent on Judith Hill and her story. The singers on whom the movie spends the most time are Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, and Lisa Fischer. So if Judith Hill is your only reason for seeing the movie, I'm not sure if it would be worth it to buy a ticket. That said, however, I would definitely recommend the movie to anyone who wants to hear interesting talk about the life of a backup singer, and tons of great music.

Waaayyy too much time, if you ask me. The movie is about the very great singers Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, and Ms Hill is simply not in their class. She hasn't done what Sting refers to in the movie as the 'spiritual footwork' necessary for a lasting place in music history, and her inclusion in the movie is almost a deliberate, and subtle, irony - the film explicitly insists that appearing on Idol (or The Voice!), assuming a win will mean instant stardom, will in fact result in what Sting (again) calls a 'wafer thin' fame. And yet Hill is trying to do just that - win on The Voice; she has so far learned nothing from the life stories of the great talents she is surrounded by in the film, going so far as to try and disguise herself when she is singing backups for Kylie because she has the very mistaken idea that the job is somehow beneath her.

Good observation. I agree.

+1 - I wasnt sure why they talked up Judith Hill so much? Can think of a million up and coming singers better than her, maybe because they didn't start as backup singers?

reply

I see why they focused on her.. to make a current comparison but I don't get they hype around her in general. She's a good singer but not great.. nowhere close to the other ladies highlighted in the documentary.

I just saw this documentary and I felt the same way. The last 25 minutes is basically about Faith. In my opinion this took away from the documentary. What has Faith even achieved as of yet in her career? Almost touring with Michael Jackson? Where as the other ladies had wonderful careers singing with iconic bands/singers. It would have been alright for a 5-10 minute section with Faith, but they focused on her for far too long.

reply

Why'd you keep calling her Faith? The da**ed name is JUDITH!!

reply

Ha, my bad. 2 years later and she still has not hit big, no surprises here.

reply

its a different day and different age, the way people become stars is so wack

reply

I agree. Judith Hill was the weakest link to this movie. Her scenes were least interesting to me. I feel like she hasn't really paid her dues yet.

reply

I don't think she's as talented as the other ladies either. Nowhere near it, if I'm being honest. I think she made it into the film simply because she's gotten some buzz in the last several years after MJ's demise. She's got a unique look about her, too. Let's face it, sometimes that's all you need to become a star.

Look, it was in a barn. People do a lot of stupid things in barns.

Hill's only in the last 15 min of the film, and she's clearly a good singer still trying to get that big break. Yeah, there may be a million singers out there better than her, but the film wasn't about them, it was about the three main singers and her. I also thought is was interesting to show three generations of backup singers to show how the industry and its demands on singers have changed over the years. I really don't see the need to put her down, anyway.

She is also young, so there is no question that she wouldn't have the experience of the other women in the film. But, does her work before this film not count for anything? Before this film was made she has recorded with Gregg Allman, Patrizio Buanne, Andrae Crouch, Elton John, Leon Russell, Carole King, Evelyn King, Barry Manilow, Dave Stewart, Rod Stewart, and Robbie Williams. Those are some musical heavy weights, in fact, her resume is longer than some of the other older women in the movie. Yes, she did The Voice, but I am sure that each and every star would admit to taking a misstep or two along their journey.

Do remember Judith mentioning that she was also a part of Michael Jackson comeback tour before he died, I do remember her being in the fifth season of the voice,

In what year she was in the competition of that reality contest?
It would be very stupid to "disguise" to perform with Kyle Minogue (sp?) on a TV show (a honest, paid job), and to have the courage to seek for "quick fame" on those crappy shows... who's one of the judges? Shakira? Stupid.
This girl has talent, but if she is looking for the easy way, it's not gonna work. NO ONE from those shows has made it outside USA.

Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language.
