Great solid documentary!

I particularly enjoyed the incorporation of archived footage as it felt immersive and engaging, additionally I learnt a great deal about the way the music industry worked. In relation to that, I was intrigued by the representation of the industry – primarily male dominated and controlled, the film emphasises an underlining of female empowerment. In addition to the ideology of ‘putting yourself out there’ and providing a first hand experience of the struggle to achieve fame and once achieving it, maintaining it. My only criticism in regards to the film would be the amount of scenes featuring ‘performances’ by the women. I understand that the documentary is essentially about music and everything related to it however, the number of instances felt repetitive and could have provided a stronger argument to the topic of discussion – backing singers.

Yes, you state it well. Many are knocking this one, but as a guy who grew up on music of the 1960s, always hearing the back-up singers but knowing nothing about them, I found this film totally fascinating.

Should it have won an Oscar? I have no idea, for I haven't seen any of the other nominees. But for me it might be the best film I see all year.

I like documentaries. So I'm gald that this is doing well. I'm looking forward to seeing this very much. I hope it goes onto dvd soon. I wonder if there is a great deal more female performers in the film because there seems to have been more female backing singers? Or perhaps they have always been more noticeable? I love the 1960s music and I associate this period with female groups and female backing singers. From the doo-wop of the early 60s to the soul singer backings, I always picture the female chanters in the background with their bee-hives or mini-skirts or whaterver.

This must be THE best documentary I ever have seen about the music business.
I don't feel that it's wrong that it mainly is about female backing singers, because they do a lot more, as the need to be sexy/dancing as well
