DVD vs. BD

Can anyone tell me the difference between the blu-ray and dvd discs? I do not have a blu-ray player, so it does not make sense for me to buy this if the DVDs are not the same as the blu-ray.

The dvd's are exactly the same as the blu ray discs, although the picture quality is of course sharper on the blu ray.
