My VHS Memories

I remember in the 90s, there was a local video shop, which I used to visit every weekend. I was allowed 2 rentals (from my mum) at £1 each. Get them on Saturday and return on Sunday. I have very fond memories of this video shop, as I was only around 10-12 at the time. Sadly it closed, before DVDs even took off, so it must have closed for other reason. Oddly enough the shop never had a single DVD. There seems to be a very distinctive smell in places where there are large number of VHS tapes. I don't know anywhere (in the uk) where you can buy a VHS player, as shops stopped selling them years ago. I don't know alot of people who still own one, let alone have any videos. I was told only a few years ago by Cash Convertors that they wouldn't take my videos for cash cos "noone buys them anymore".

Ah yes the age of video cassettes. Big bulky things that wore out after repeated viewings or else ended up jamming inside the VCR therefore ruining the tape. I miss those days. The Betamax/VHS war. Video rental stores on every corner (or so it seemed).

Watching this brought back a lot of memories. I fondly remember when they first came out. "Awesome, you can watch the same movie as seen in a theater BUT you can pause it to go to the bathroom or grab a snack!" I had a massive collection which took up a lot of room in the basement. Man times have changed. In this day and age of HD BRs I'll always remember the good old days of tracking adjustments and fast forwarding to get to the good part in a flick.

Long live the 70s!
