The cartoons were lame
They easily could have done re-enactments with live people. The cartoons were just goofy, and took away the classiness of the show.

shareI agree. I just could not get past the cartoons and gave up on the show in the middle of the second episode. It may be childish on my part, but it is what it is. It was a huge letdown for me.
I am trying again now on Netflix, but I doubt I'll get much further than I did.
Don't waste your time with Cosmos ASTO, other than a few really nice CGI scenes the series was a failure. Watch the original series and go from there. The 1980 Cosmos still holds up and is an outstanding series on science and the history of the universe. Science wasn't as politicized back then. Unfortunately most topics covered in ASTO are driven by the religious left and profit driven institutions who claim to be open minded.
"When he found that his long cherished beliefs did not agree with the most precise observations, he accepted the uncomfortable facts. He preferred the hard truth to his dearest illusions. That is the heart of science."

Well, I have nothing else to do for three weeks than watch TV or read books while convalescing.
As for the original series, saw it first run and read the book too.

Chuck Jones (you'd have heard of him, going by your Daffy Duck avatar) said that animators are just "actors with pencils". If you found the animation in Cosmos unappealing visually, couldn't you just stare at the ceiling while it was on? You'd still be able to hear the information, like it was coming from a radio.

I liked the cartoons. But then I like cartoons in general.

I'm the exact opposite on this, I thought the animations were phenomenal and really added a nice element to the series, as well as adding contrast to the material ultimately making it more fun to watch. Did you actually watch the original? It was akin to a 2 hour lecture at Carnegie Mellon on Astronomy. Which by the way, you can watch online for free. Do you do it? No? Because it's boring af. Hence, the animations.
shareI prefer the more intellectual feel of the original, with no cartoons.
