The Belt Scene (Spoiler-ish)

It's such an odd little scene near the end of the film where he has just finished packing up his office.
He takes his belt out, fastens it to the bars outside his window and begins to fall away from said window with the other end of the belt in his teeth. Of course, he was interrupted by the phone call.
My question: Was he attempting suicide there and if so, how on earth would that have gotten the job done?

It's such an unusual scene and doesn't really matter in the end in regards to the film, but Am I missing something?

They want us to think that at first, but what they show us in the end is that he is attempting the trick that Billy did in prison, holding himself up from the third floor by his teeth from his belt for three minutes.

Thanks, I watched this in two installments and had forgotten about that. What a strange movie.

Yes, they fooled us into thinking that once his last case had been taken care of, and he has no job anymore, that he would want to end his life.

I was shouting at the TV, "Don't you bloody dare!" (at both his character and the writer!)

Thank god he was just curious to see how difficult it was to dangle from a belt with just your teeth, like in the story the prison guard told him.

"Look at it this way; in a hundred years who's gonna care?"
