W O W . . .

So--let me get this straight?

Murderer, sociopath who killed the original Jill, and stayed with the Jill he cheated/played God with and fooled into thinking he was genuine got the biggest break in cinema history.

This film basically held up this character and rooted for him to do these awful actions throughout its entirety, the screenplay didn't do it in a way where he could even be celebrated as an anti-hero, it seemed more like they didn't know the message here was as awful as it ended up being.

What I don't understand is the irrational hate Jill is getting--it's a lot like the hate Skyler White received from Breaking Bad and I think the root of it is sexism.

This young woman is a championship fence player, she's having a huge competition and her competitor (who happened to be the last girl standing, just like Jill in this fencing tournament) ended up beating her. This same woman, who beat Jill, gave the protagonist a kiss and the protagonist was in shock for not even a second until he held her and kissed her back--Yeah, that's what happened; he wasn't forced. Jill was never a bitch, her reaction was never uncalled for or overdramatic, we have all been teenagers before. She was humiliated by losing, so seeing the person who made her feel this way being held by her boyfriend is going to definitely do something huge. She went to this party to forget, he ended up being there too solely to manipulate her in every damaging way possible. Every reaction she had was nearly genuine and real and this is what lead to her demise.

The protagonist never saw Jill as a person (never), only how his life would be impacted by her. He was purely selfish and evil, cared for nobody but himself and it wasn't done in a humorous or knowing way.

This movie's screenplay should've been used on a bigger budget film and an ending that was not this one. I was rooting all the way until the end, I saw some stuff I'd never seen before and had a total appreciation for the concept which is why the ending was a bigger disappointment to me than it should've been. I understand the apathy here, but it was done in a way where you're almost fooled into thinking it's the right resolve and that's pretty damn *beep*

How old are you? Does every movie have to end with a moral message? No. Grow up.

I feel bad for you that you need movies to teach you how to live and I feel even worse for you that you think others need the same thing. We don't.

It's just a fun movie.
