How could he afford to buy all those machines?

In the movie he explains he used to have a union job. But, that he quit to tour the country with his band. I'm sure he might have made some scratch from that. But, I doubt it made him rich. Then they just transition into him telling us about how he purchased hundreds of arcade games. It never once mentions what he was doing for a means of support before opening the arcade.
