What grandchild?

It may relate to a few episodes I've missed, but what grandchild was Grace referring to when she confronts Allingham in the street? (Ep 3)

reply

In the series one finale, Clem told Grace that Joe and her daughter Caro had had a child together.

It was aborted? (I thought I'd be able to check out on the BBC iPlayer but they're only showing series 2).

reply

Lady Allingham adopted out the child.

A man and woman came to the big house and left with the child--Lady A searched her belongings and gave her grand child a scarf that belonged to her, so the baby would have something from its biological family. (Not that Lady A wasn't trying to sweep Caro's illegitimate child's existence under the carpet...)

Grace found out about the baby long after the child had gone. And it's been festering in her, as we saw.

Many thanks. I suppose I should really get the DVD.

Yes, I've been wondering when Grace would kick up about that child.

Losing your son to the Great War, being shot by your own side is one horror. But then having a baby boy of his taken away before you ever knew about him, so that you truly have nothing left of your son, is horror stacked upon horror.

She had to realize the one small comfort she could have had, which was holding her son's child in her arms and watching him grow up, was denied her due to the Allingham's power, just to save face for the Allinghams. Ugh.

At least the baby would have been a comfort. But that baby has got to be a little boy by now--at least 7-8-9 ish. (Can't remember which year he was born.)

And now Grace is finding her voice more and more to express anger and rage over a lot of things dealt to her in this village's social system.
