I don't understand.

I don't understand why they needed to tell the guy they had porridge for breakfast. I don't understand why the teacher didn't want to say he'd protect his children. I don't understand why the horse was so important if they're gonna be given £75 to just buy a new one. I don't understand why there was garlic in the cows milk. I don't understand where the baby went - wasn't the mum pregnant last week? I don't understand why they were gardening all night. I don't understand why they took the horse to the pub. I don't understand how they're making a living if they've sold the farm and the cows have got garlic in them. I just don't understand, I'm very confused...

He didn't want to say he'd protect the children because he wanted to bowl out of conscription on moral grounds. I.e he didn't believe in violence.
The horse in time of war was worth a lot more than 75 pounds, plus how do you put money on something you have love for..........men died for their horses in the past.
There was garlic in the milk because their was garlic in the field, hence them pulling it all up all night.
The mum was pregnant last week, hence the massive bump she had.
He took the horse to the pub to hide it so they didn't take the horse.
They have not sold the farm they sold A field, singular.

Either you were not paying much attention, or this drama is a bit too sophis for you.

I didn't get the garlic milk thing, admittedly I have very little knowledge of dairy farming but I'd have thought it would take a few days for the garlic to clear from the cows even though they dug it all out of the fields?

reply

You don't really need to know much about farming to know that. Just a small amount of historical knowledge.

reply

Eh? My history classes never covered the amount of time it takes for garlic to leave a cow's digestive system?

reply

If the only history you have ever learnt was from history classes at school then your history IS extremely limited.

reply

My knowledge of history would be extremely limited, yes. It wouldn't make the slightest difference to my history.

So how long does it take for garlic to leave a cow's digestive system? I'm afraid that it was never taught at school and has not been a subject I've needed to research too much since, and google isn't throwing much up.

Read sunset song

Just read a brief summary on wikipedia, sounds pretty harrowing, but I'll give it a read, are the other parts of A Scots Quair worth ordering as well?

reply

No, that book is about as dull as watching paint dry lol.
I also live in the country..about 5 mins away from a farm specialising in cows, and knew the previous farmers.

reply

Ah, thanks. Read this, it's *beep* but has a fascinating insight into bovine biology amongst other things. Last time I take reading suggestions from IMDB :-)

Visit the Berkshire museum of Agriculture.

reply

Is that a history book?

Re £75 - the Army was requisitioning all the horses, so there would be no replacements around to buy.

The porridge thing is a bit puzzling. The guy visiting was obviously some sort of School Inspector (although the same character keeps reappearing doing whatever job is useful for the current week's plot). Presumably the teachers would be somehow held responsible for their pupils' well being. Hence the sharing of spare pairs of boots as well as being coached to say that they had a good brekky.

reply

My thought about the porridge scene was that the children were not being exactly truthful about what they ate because they needed to sound like they were making sacrifices during a time of war. Hence, Burt saying he had meat and eggs for breakfast was not a good thing. Just my take...

reply

I don't understand lots of things about it either, but..

I don't understand why the teacher didn't want to say he'd protect his children.

if he believes in violence to defend life or principle, making war in effect..he can't be a conscientious objector, can he? Unfortunately, the well-meaning kid blew his cover..

I don't understand why the horse was so important if they're gonna be given £75 to just buy a new one

because there aren't any spare to buy...that's why they are being pressed for theirs. Fair enough, it sounds like a damned lot of money back then, even in the circumstances...

I don't understand why they took the horse to the pub.

sounds like a riddle or joke intro, but, no, just to hide it from the aholes wanting to draft it to haul artillery on the Western Front, and wind up like 'Warhorse" and his buddy..

I don't understand why there was garlic in the cows milk.

because the pasture is infested with it...so, they pulled them all up in a frenzy.
garlic in the milk sounds like would bring health benefits anyway, frankly..probably it would be welcome in France, but in England, not so much.

they did not sell entire farm...just one field.
