Tarantino rip-off meets Home & Away/Neighbours

Rubbish film. I wonder why Pegg and Braga agreed to be in this.

I've never watched an episode of H&A or Neighbours. Maybe Tarantino meets Wild Things meets Lock Stock...? Either way, I thought it was quite a ride.

reply

I wouldn't say Lock Stock because there is no memorable dialogue in this film or characters. Wild Things i'd agree because of the twists and turns but this certainly wasn't a sexy film.

Why is every movie about criminals always a Tarantino comparison??

There is so little about this film even remotely connected to anything Tarantino has ever done, it's absurd to bring it up. Dialogue, editing, direction, nothing.

Tarantino did not invent movies about criminals and either did Guy Ritchie

This movie is not that great, no. But it has nothing to do with ripping anyone off. Peg was pretty good I think. Who does he owe that to? Clint Eastwood?.

reply

I cannot see much connection with Tarantino, but as far as the plot goes, and the incompetence of all the characters in achieving their aims, it reminded me of the Coens' "Blood Simple". The overbearing bar owner, his cache of money, his wife and her lover, the bent cop (private dick in "Blood Simple"), the returns to the scenes of the crimes, etc. But all shot in bright sunshine with camerawork from "Neighbours".

And Pegg's well-spoken and unhurried English hitman was surely modelled on Bill Nighy's in "Wild Target".

Cheap and cheerful. I quite enjoyed it.

reply

Finally someone gets it haha... Tarantino not even close this is like you said basically Blood Simple remade with an Aussie setting.

reply

Similarities are that both are crime films with dark humor. Both have antagonist wearing black. Both have someone shoot when an appliance does something. Both are structured around a few inter-related stories. Both have self-referential humor.

I also got a Tarantino feel from this movie. I am not saying that it's a bad thing. The items that were Tarantino-esque IMO include;

Scenes shown out of order
Chapter titles
Stylish use of music
Vintage cars
Killer with an unusual sense of style and humor
Graphic and very bloody violence
Characters plotting against each other
"Humorous" deaths

There's probably more that I can't think of right now.

I also noticed when the microwave went off and startled Pegg into shooting the cop, was identical to the scene in Pulp Fiction when Butch kills Vincent when startled by a toaster.

reply

Yeah I thought of that right away when it happened.

reply

Yeah I just knew that microwave was going to ruin the awkward encounter and make someone react. But the outcome was so cool that I didn't mind.

reply

Naw. Really good movie.
