Quirky sure, but a waste of time ? I don't get that !

There's a heck of a lot of dissenters putting this movie down but I don't understand why. Sure, it was never going to win any major awards at the Kodak but it had a lot more going on than most of the reviewers think IMHO. The movie has it's problems - the first third was a little overlong (the vehicle journey) and there were a few flaky CGI moments too but it built nicely into the diner and kind of had a stage play feel from there on - characters entering and exiting stage (right in this case) building tension and inviting us to make sense of everything being seen. Cos, whatever you felt it was going to be like going in, it certainly threw a curve ball in there. If you expected Zombie, or Tarantino, Carpenter, or Nispel, what you ended up with is more Lynch and von Trier. It was a mind *beep* for sure - at least it was for me - and there were so many layers to what was going on I had to go back over it to make sure what I thought I'd understood actually was. I've seen comments that the director (I think) made in Q&A's after the film's release, and so I went back for a second viewing to check out if what he said was all *beep* or actually something I could see in the movie. And sure enough I actually got what he was saying. A shame it comes across a little too cerebral in many ways but it's a hell of a lot smarter than many (in fact most) of the reviewers give it credit for. I rate it a 6/10 for originality and effort on his first movie........some way short of a perfect experience but maybe next time the director will deliver something easier to understand.
