Disappointing Failure

I just saw this stunningly bad film and I wonder if this group of professionals chose to make it this way for some ill-conceived artistic reason, or if it was just the result of ineptitude. The actors were worse than community theater amateurs, just reading the script with no attempt at naturalistic delivery. The result was an unwatchable movie that, in addition to the wooden writing and acting, attempted to make Dickinson into a rebel with an abrasive personality, which is probably the opposite of the rather mild-mannered person she actually seems to have been.

Everything in the film was devoid of actual realistic humanity or feeling. A painting has more color and warmth than this. Notice Cynthia's hands, how stiff they are, you notice she doesn't know what to do with them as opposed to Ehle who comes across more naturally. Notice the lack of accessories and joyfulness in the wedding. The world here is presented in a sterile, cold, and bare, like watching an alternate futuristic reality where people are removed from emotions and color, they are automatons.

I loved this movie. Not sure what you expected, but I was never bored with it.

reply

I expected something more artistically and professionally written, directed, and performed than what I saw.

Oh I see, a fake movie.

It was a fake movie. The writing was fake, not historically accurate or naturalistic. The acting was fake and wooden, not realistic. What I expected was a good movie.

I thought the acting was very good and entirely appropriate....

I liked the heightened way that they spoke... Allows us to see things with a certain detachment and distance to see the bigger picture, but it was also performed intensely enough for us to feel it when it mattered...

It was a total failure. I've seen first graders do better plays. Glad you enjoyed it, though.
