I can't remember the last time I managed to stay to the end of such a stinker. If you go and watch high concept crap like Transformers then it's no big deal to walk after 20 minutes as you already know it's going to be rubbish.
But I had high hopes for Le Week-end. More fool me.
I agree that sneaking out of a restaurant is wrong but it was kind of funny. I dont' see what is wrong with sniffing a vagina or smoking grass. Is that something you shouldn't do when you are in your 50s according to you?
It is interesting that a few people have mentioned the sneaking out of the restaurant, as if bad things should not be portrayed in films. Films often have murder, robbery, adultery, fraud, etc. We know they are bad, but that is what films are about.
Strange, but I found it engaging and funny. Me and my partner of over 30 years enjoyed it and found it very true to life. I got the impression that other middle-aged couples in the cinema were enjoying it too.
Awful Movie. How does rubbish like this get lottery funding? I have seen 144 movies this year, and this is by far the worst. Jim Broadbent is wasted on a poor story and worse script.
I have to agree, this is the worst film I have watched in a long time. It bore little resemblance to any married couple of their age I have ever known.
It just shows the quality we can expect when'free money' (lottery) is available.
I rather liked it but I'd had 1 1/2 bottles of Cotes du Rhone before it started.
LOL. That might have helped! I didn't think the film was terrible. I liked parts of it, especially the beginning with the couple trying to find a nice hotel and taking the taxi ride through Paris. I liked Jim Broadbent's performance a lot too. I like Lindsay Duncan as an actress, but I just thought her character was too cold here to feel anything for her.
Jeff Goldblum excels in playing irritating characters, as he did here.
I liked the references to Godard's Bande à part, complete with the Madison dance, but I don't exactly know why they were included in the film. Perhaps to add an air of whimsy or as an homage.
What ruined the film for me was partially the sound quality. I couldn't make out a lot of the dialogue (I've heard this complaint from others). I also thought the film veered off toward the absurd with the couple staying in a posh hotel, eating at fancy restaurants and then trying to get out of paying--all the while acting as if it were a lark. And then getting help from the wealthy Morgan (Goldblum), who they didn't really seem to like. It all seemed like a farce, except it wasn't really set up that way earlier in the film.
I am with you about Jim Broadbent's performance. The fact that I also had a client who had the same way of staring at things with his wide eyes like young kids and Nick (Broadbent) did and the way Nick rolled back and laughed earlier in the film, made him very relatable to me.
I had a more difficult time related to Meg (Lindsay Duncan). She appeared too cold for me and I could not help not to care / feel for her.
Jeff Goldblum as Morgan was delightful.
I did not read critics, went in with no expectation and utterly enjoyed it!
It's hard to find the bitterness and lost hopes of a middle-aged couple compelling viewing. I think the film does the best it can with such a cold and dispiriting script. The acting was good, the setting gorgeous and the soundtrack fantastic. The problem for the film was that it was praised highly by critics when it was released at the cinemas and so I watched it with high expectations.
Movement ends, intent continues; Intent ends, spirit continues
I'm not a strong fan of the movie, but it's decent enough. I guess some folks may have been lead to believe this was a romantic comedy of sorts, and felt let down by the bitterness of much of the piece. Certainly, the central couple's constant bickering isn't exactly the picture of a lovely weekend in Paris.
Still, I think the movie has enough emotional truths and good acting to carry it through. And, it was nice to see Goldblum in a meaty, if supporting, role for what seems like the first time in years.
I wasn't highly offended, but sort of so-so in my reaction. I don't regret going, altho I wouldn't recommend it.
But I'm taking the trouble to reply because I did have a lot of trouble relating to how their closest moments seemed to be linked to when they skipped out on paying for their consumption of the luxurious life.
And Jim Broadbent's character did drink and otherwise indulge a fair deal without it really seeming to make much of a dent.
Glad I did not listen to all of the negativity surrounding this film. I loved it. It took time to get into it, but in the middle everything clicked and I found it very enjoyable. It is not for everyone, but saying something is boring really doesn't describe this movie accurately.
I liked Le Weekend too, though I checked the message board AFTER I saw the movie.
The IHUB message boards used to be used by "film geeks." Now, when a guy gets dragged to a movie by his girlfriend, he goes home and complains about the movie on IHUB, lol.
Absolutely. This is no place to get commentary by people who actually study film or have broad cinematic tastes, anymore. Might as well be YouTube. Le Week-End was complex, thought-provoking, highly original and deftly shot. The performances were fantastic. An A+ film all the way.
I'd just add that Lindsay Duncan is an extraordinary actress. About Time is another great performance by her. I'm not an expert and I want to see her in more things. Bill Nighy also--amazing in Page Eight.
They felt good when they got away with the stealing. And why shouldn't they? They worked hard all their lives and for some reason cannot afford a decent hotel or meal? So they said Hell With It, Carpe Diem, and decided to have the weekend they wanted.
Good on them I say. More people should try it.
---- Darling, nothing is final 'til you're dead, and even then, I'm sure God negotiates.
Worked hard all their lives? So what. Take a loan on your house, borrow from retirement, but don't steal. Why are they entitled to a good weekend on someone else? I found this notion ridiculous. Also her also running off without paying at one restaurant.
