Eva was a very immature character.

I say this because of the way she handled her relationship with Albert and his ex. One sincere conversation could have stopped anyone from being hurt. She should not have resulted to picking on him, based on his ex wife's experiences. That was not only immature, but mean. Also, her sexual advice to her daughter's friend was completely out of place. Ellen was far more mature than her mom. Eva truly had some growing up to do.

You are right. Another point is how Eva couldn't see how whack Albert's ex wife was. I mean, she was an obvious weirdo, how could Eva align herself with her? She didn't deserve to win Albert back, but it was refreshing to see a woman be forgiven in a film and being taken back. I don't think I've seen that much. At least, I can't think of any time off the top of my head.

Mary Ann was hardly a "weirdo". She had major shortcomings, was so full of herself, I thought she was a total phony, rude, etc., but hardly weird. If Albert was such a terrible person, what does it say about her that she married him in the first place?

Eva was insecure - I never understood why - and thought Mary Ann had just class and wanted to be like her. Mary Ann's daughter was just as bad; which would make Mary Ann less than a great parent. I never got why Eva was so taken with her.

She was impressed with Marianne's fame and "spirituality" - even though Marianne was more of a spiritual poseur and quite unspiritual in her relationships. Eva got taken in by what passed for success. The film was kind of subversive and the more I watch snippets of it the more I appreciate it. It's rare that a film allows its heroine to be flawed in such a complex way.

yes but then there wouldnt have been a movie. Also, Eva knew she was messed up, she even admitted that to Chloe at one point.
