It takes a village

Have you ever fallen for someone's act, then discovered their true nature after you'd gotten in too deep?
Have you ever wished you'd had the opportunity to learn his true history from his ex-wife?
Eva has that opportunity. I don't blame her for taking it.
Al's flaws that Marianne reveals are tiny - that's what makes it a light comedy. The flaws she reveals are things that Eva, a new acquaintance of Al's, can also observe in him. This helps the screenwriter move the plot, with opportunity for forshadowing.
But even though it's softened for comedy + plot, it points to a problem all people face, not just a white-peoples first-world problem. In a more starkly realistic version, Al would be hiding addictions, debts, kids. Eva's need to check with Al's Ex is real.

If only you came from the same small town, where everyone's history was known to everyone else. If only you had a match maker, to know who's dangerous.

Have you ever looked back and realized you'd ignored the red flags?
