Not as good as Holofcener's earlier work

I read (after I had formed that opinion, mind you) that she was approached to do this film on the condition that it be "more mainstream". And it apparently worked as this is her most successful film box-officewise, yet it was still strongly reviewed. I guess I'd like her to go back to being "less mainstream" (more like Please Give, please), although I actually have trouble seeing what is specifically mainstream about this film. I would not have guessed that dynamic was in play; I just thought it was not as well written.

I'm (my hubby, too) a big fan of Catherine Keener and most of actors in this ensemble as well as those in "Please Give". I think the writing in both films is equally solid.

This film succeeds beautifully as 'dramady' -- especially because of the great chemistry between the leads. I was very impressed with this little film and found it quite insightful and touching.

I thought this was a nice return to form for Holofcener. I adored both Walking & Talking and Lovely & Amazing, but was not as enamoured of Friends with Money (sorry, Jennifer Aniston is never convincing when she is "slumming" as a lower-class character) or Please Give (which made so little impression that I can't even really remember it). This one will stay with me for a while.
