A world with no minorities

This movie exists in a white-people universe, where the only minority is a single Hispanic woman who -- of course -- is a house maid. Parties -- like the one where the couple first "meets cute" -- are held at mansions with huge grounds and are illuminated with strings of lights and "white balls."

Go to L.A. sometime, and see if you can find this imaginary world.

It's the world of the actors trying to imagine how normal people live.

How the hell is having people of color in a film "shoving" any damn thing down someone's throat? The majority of films--Hollywood or indie re usually about white people--what the hell is wrong with putting in a couple of non-white people. We're part of the American fabric/everyday American life too. So just because certain people are minorities, they shouldn't even be shown in a film? You sound like some arrogant person that's been stuck in your little privileged bubble for too damn long---plus your statements stupid as hell, and racist and classist, too. Obviously, you must be white, otherwise you wouldn't have made such an ignorant statement in the first place. As a black person, I'd like to see people who look like me onscreen every now and then, since white people hog the majority of screens anyway---ain't a damn thing wrong with that.

It did seem odd that the Los Angeles culture shown in this film was so white. It was a wise-cracking, erudite fantasy world. It was like an episode of "Seinfeld." It was kind of unsettling, particularly since I've been there. Come on Hollywood. There are white people, and Asian people, and Hispanic people, and Black people. It's every day life. I don't suggest over-doing it to be politically correct -- I'm suggesting your writers live a real life in the real world and start showing us stories and situations that reflect 21st century America. When I see old 30s, 40's and '50s movies on TCM, they reflect an America that was arguably a vast majority European American. That just isn't the case anymore, but "liberal" Hollywood hasn't caught up. Maybe the bankable stars are mostly white, and Hollywood simply follows the money. But the world shown in this movie was a fantasy world.

reply

There should have some minorities shown, especially with the teen girls. Goes to show that Hollywood is not as liberal as the media claims. They do live in a fantasy world.

Jews are a minority. Seinfeld was mostly minorities, because they were overwhelmingly of the Jewish minority.

Comedy is not pretty

The percentage of them in real life is not high. But a much better example is gay characters. Less than 2% of the population claims to be gay or bi, yet they throw out way more than that percentage in tv shows and movies now, just trying to push the supposed normalcy.

reply

Yeah! Who needs any diversity in film, television, or the media! - said a white person

reply

Perhaps the writer director doesn't have very much experience with minorities? Is that a crime? I'd rather have a director create something authentic to them than something populated with characters unfamiliar to them. You know, many minorities don't associate with white people right?

That's your prejudice talking. And I'm being generous by not using the R word

reply

haha what's funny is hollywood films ARE the ones full of minorities, minorities as in jewish actors! only around 2% of the u.s. is jewsish but it seems most of everything on television these days is occupied by jewish entertainers, this film felt no whiter to me though than any other really, BUT it did feel very californian

reply

Wow! Is there anything else you wish to nitpick about? If that's the only fault then it must be a pretty good movie.

I personally have no friends and very few casual acquaintances even who are minorities so it did not seem odd to me. Not everyone lives in a world that is as diversified as you seem to think. This is nothing other than the fact that I don't come into contact with many minorities in the area where I live. I am not wealthy nor do I live in a sheltered environment -- there just are very few people who are minorities that live in my neighborhood or even in my town. I don't have a house maid and any parties I might attend just do not have any minorities that are in attendance either.

Am I supposed to get upset when I watch a movie that has all black people in it (think Tyler Perry movies for instance among several I have watched -- that is just an example off the top of my head) that there are no white people in the cast? It doesn't bother me if it would be completely implausible for white people to be cast in movies in situations where there would be no white people in those places in real life.

reply

Doesn't matter, queen, that makes you a racist. You need to quit your job and go on a nationwide tour to find minorities and relocate them to your area.

reply

Lol you're comment made me laugh out loud

reply

Was there much room in the film to feature minorities? Even in the real world how many minorities would you honestly see at a party like the one featured in the movie? How many minorities hire a masseuse to come to their house? If you had made the film, where would you have cast minorities to make it more authentic?

reply

Anywhere? why would it be LESS "authentic" if a minority had been in any role in that film? And what in the world do you mean by "how many minorities would hire a masseuse to come to their house"??

reply

I guess it would have been MORE authentic if blacks were cast as the bickering couple. What do I mean? I mean that minorities don't hire masseuses. And before you get offended, seriously how many people in general do you know that hire masseuses? And how many of them are minorities?

reply

it would have been MORE authentic if blacks were cast as the bickering couple

Racist stereotypes. Drinking Kool Aid too?

reply

And how does something become a stereotype?

reply

How would you know?? I work as a massage therapist just like the character in the movie and plenty of my clients have been non-white.

Seemed kind of peaceful, didnt it? Sure, there was conflict, but no one got shot or stabbed, the police didnt have to be called to break up stupid drunken fights...

I didnt put it all together until I read your post.

Thank you for clearing that up! 
