The French Canadian version of Starbuck is a great movie...funny...sweet...heart-breaking! I hope that the American version with Vince Vaughn doesn't turn the story into something vulgar with cheap laughs. There was a lot of depth to the FCV!

I don't think any audience likes to read subtitles. Films are significantly more enjoyable if they're written and voiced in your language. Not to mention, a number of jokes may depend on familiarity with the culture.
...of course, a lot of movies are good enough to put up with subtitles. (Incidentally, I think this movie had a shoot in my neighborhood last week.)

Because international audiences are forced to watch imported American films and they don't have the money to remake them in their own language with their own cultural norms.

actually, subtitles don't take anything from a movie. i have been watching movies with subtitles ever since i was a kid, as in my country there is no dubbing. i can assure you i don't even register the presence of subtitles on the screen. it's like the words and images are one and i just absorb both without any setbacks.
in other words, a little practice makes movies with subtitles very enjoyable.
What?! ... I live in Asia and the majority of movies that I watch are Chinese, Korean or Japanese. Don't get me wrong, I like English speaking movies equally (English movies are sub-ed in Chinese) but there is nothing, I repeat, nothing worse than a poorly dubbed foreign movie.
Movies in your home tongue or not, regardless they can equally be great. Depends on the director, actors, score, plot ... etc.
As of today the original Starbuck has made $340,058 in the US. Actually thrilled that the original director is getting a chance to remake what appears to be a great movie. Hopefully it will be a big hit and than he can have an opportunity to make other films in Hollywood.

shareI've seen Starbuck three times and I absolutely love it. It's a very sweet and touching film with many truly hilarious moments without being out and out raunchy. I just found out today that this film was being made -- with Vince Vaughn, no less -- and my immediate reaction was oh, no. I have a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.

shareI don't understand why america keeps remaking wonderful foreign films for millions when they could just put the money out there to get the original, wonderful more exposure and encourage more people to see it. Subtitles do not take away from a wonderful film. It's one thing to remake a film, but to remake it so soon simply because people are lazy and don't want to read subtitles is kind of insulting to the original picture.
But I must acknowledge that the original director being at the helm gives me hope that the original message and tone will remain with this remake and hopefully it won't fall to *beep*

It's real simple: Exposure is lacking to this entire cast, within the US.
In order to get a nation-wide release you need actors anchoring the film with a proven record of nation-wide exposure.
I would like to see more Canadian and International actors playing supporting roles in US major motion pictures so when such a film comes from say Canada people already know the leading actors.
I loved that the original film! I saw it at a screening at MoMA. There was a Q & A after. I'm glad that the story is being done in English for the sake of the filmmaker getting more exposure. Maybe if this version is good, people will want to see the original. I've seen some great foreign films screened here that never take off. I agree--funny, sweet, heart-breaking.
