Vaughn's Politics hurting box office?

He has recently expressed his political views and wonder if that is hurting his films. Personally, I do not care what an actor's views are, it has nothing to do with whether I see a film or not. But I am not so sure about the masses. It was Clay Pigeons and Return to Paradise that made me a fan of his. And I will continue to be a fan, regardless of what others think about him or his personal views, we all have them. Any opinions?

Kelsey Grammer and James Woods have spoken out recently saying that them being Republicans have caused their shows to be canceled (Kelsey), or a lack of work (James). I don't think it bothers the masses, but Vaughn's film went up against The Hunger Games sequel, so his film didn't stand a chance, so far.
Directors are more likely to choose who they want to work with, so it's possible they may shun certain actors, because of their politics.
A lot of the big name action directors are gay, so with the GOP being against same-sex marriage, that could be a problem.

reply

Vaughn isn't a Republican though, he's a Libertarian.

I count six shots.
I count two guns!

reply

You're right! I forgot. Sorry about the GOP paragraph.
But Vince has said publicly that he supports Rand Paul. Paul has no chance of being elected, he's like this decade's Ross Perot. Plus he's made some statements either racist or homophobic (I can't remember which) that were offensive. The bottom line is Paul isn't a Democrat.

reply

Rand Paul has already been elected, to the US Senate. And if you can find any racist or homophobic statements he's made, post a link. I don't think you'll find any.

reply

How about his comments about how people living in inner cities have poor work ethic?

reply

I live in NYC in Queens a few blocks away from the projects and guess what, most of them do have a bad work ethic. In fact, you'll find the courtyard there pretty much packed in the middle of the day.

reply

That, or the fact that the neighborhoods they live in don't have jobs. Get a grip, you racist twat.

reply

God forbid they hop on the subway and travel a few miles to where there is a job. It's NYC! They can leave the neighborhood and travel outside the borough. When I lived in Queens I found a job in Manhattan and so did most people.

Yeah, but die-hard Democrats often have this attitude that you're either totally with them, or you're totally against them.

reply

Grammer's words and actions during his divorce along with low rating are what killed his show. James woods is far from a good actor he's mediocre that's why he's finding a lack of work.

"The People Of America Have Spoken THE REAL TITLE TOWN U.S.A IS VALDOSTA GEORGIA"

reply

As far as James Woods is concerned.

If you must call Arabs 'Towel heads' then do not be surprised that your films and shows may not play well in the Middle East or producers just do not want to hire you!

Its that man again!!

reply

Grammer's last show was terrible. It wasn't politics that killed it - it was public disinterest.
That said, I read his book, and felt I needed a shower! Ick. What a sad narcissist! I've seen a couple of Frasier repeats since, and I will say I enjoyed his character less. And I really liked the show when it was on.

reply

Hasn't hurt Eastwood, Owen Wilson, Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, et al. Grammer and Woods were punished for having bad shows.

Life is never fair, and perhaps it is a good thing for most of us that it is not.

reply

His movies sucking is what is hurting this pull at the box office.

Insults are the arguments employed by those who are in the wrong.

reply

Not to mention bad timing,as Beequeen has said!!

One critic termed Vaughn's usual onscreen demeanor as "his trademark snark." Vaughn may be a lovely man in real life. But as an artist- the roles he takes and the interviews he does- he SEEMS to be kind of a "richard". He may not be one, but he acts like one often enough that I personally find him distasteful- and I was bummed about that, too, because I thought "Dodgeball" was great (and of course marvelously "stupid"!). I avoided "Delivery Man" at first solely because of previous Vaughn douchery. But I went (last night) out of utter boredom, and I had read encouraging reviews which said he was not such an a**hole in this one. I had a good time and really liked the movie. Silly? Yes! Schmaltzy? Yes! But I like that. Goofy is good, sometimes.

reply

Vaughn's trademark snark....I like that, and its true he pretty much plays the exact same character whatever role he is in.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

I doubt it's his political views that would keep someone from his movies. He has a certain genre he pretty much sticks to and he has a rather distinct acting style. If you are the type that likes that sort of thing you will see his movies if you don't like that kind of thing and go anyway, well you get what you deserve. I try not to get too hung up on a single person who is involved in a movie. There are usually hundreds of people involved in making a film and any number of them could be a complete jackal or any number of them could be lovely people. But, if I hear the key grip is a douche I for sure am not going to see Catching Fire.

If you love Cheezits and are 100% proud of it copy this and make it your signature.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and being respectful about the subject. I encourage everyone to go out to watch movies without thinking about the actor's views are all about. It is all about the acting/performance, not what Sean Penn thinks about communism. Also, like someone else said, movies employ hundreds to thousands of people on every movie who needs to put food on their table. Hollywood entertains us everyday and we should support their cause.

SoFW! I'm proud of my Vince for speaking out for what he believes in politically !!! I have always always loved him - since his earlier movies, it has nothing to do w/his political views either (because back in his earlier films I had no idea what his political leaning were) - I'M A REGISTERED INDEPENDENT -BUT MAY LEAN MORE TO THE LIBERTARIAN VIEWS - AND/OR CONSERVATIVE(in some issues); ONE THINK I DO BELIEVE IN GAY MARRIAGE, I HAVE SO MANY GAY FRIENDS IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY THEY CAN NOW GET MARRIED - BEING FROM NEW ORLEANS - WHICH HAS THE FRENCH QUARTER AND IS A PLACE W/ALOT OF HOMOSEXUALS - I GREW UP W/THEM AROUND ME AND PROUDLY SO.... I DO NOT like the current President - Obama, they have a lot of things on him that disgraces the White House more so than Bill Clinton EVER DID OR President Kennedy as well; I'm talking about Obama NOT caring about Healthcare, the Military's funding- FOR EVERYTHING that has to do w/the men and women fighting for our country, he SIMPLY DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THEM! When will the media throw some HARDBALL QUESTIONS at HIM ! SICK of the "baby-gloves they put on for him" - ITS NOT FAIR!!!! MAKE OBAMA ANSWER FOR ALL THE "WRONG DOINGS" his administration has done - man, there are so many!!! STOP THE DAMN MADNESS AND MAKE THIS PRESIDENT ANSWER FOR WHAT HE/ADMN. HAS DONE-ALSO HE'S NOT FROM HAWAII - LIE LIE LIE !!! He recently disrespected Mandela's funeral by laughing and goofing off the whole time; MANDELA was in prison for over 20 years for something he did NOT do!!! I tried in his first term to give him a chance but it didn't work ALSO his second term he did so many "iffy" things that really made me disgusted w/him and his administration. The media is protecting him -WHAT ELSE IS KNEW? Strange he didn't like gay marriage in his first term but SUDDENLY had a "change of heart" and now believes in it ---- its BS!!! VAUGHN YOU ROCK AND I ADMIRE YOU SO MUCH FOR SPEEKING OUT FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IT - YOU ALSO ARE A FANTASTIC VERSATILE ACTOR --- LOVE YOU FROM THE BEGINNING :) SO HAPPY YOU FOUND A WONDERFUL WIFE AND HAVE 2 BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN -- THEY ARE SO ADORABLE :) P.S. PLEASE COME DOWN TO NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA AND MAKE SOME MOVIES - WE LOVE TO HAVE YOU AS A KING FOR A MARDI GRAS PARADE - LIKE MAYBE ENDYMION - WOW WHAT A GEM YOU WOULD BE AS KING!!:)

reply

Totally agree with everything you said!!!!

I believe you are very correct - its his political views and the fact he doesn't kiss Hollywood's ass and/or does he fawn all over Pres. Obama; Vaughn is NOT a fan of the current administration... I'm also like you- I could careless about the politics I just hate when they try to shove their political views down our throat. There is a "certain clique" in Hollywood that are all about Obama and Vaughn and I should say Adam Sandler as well don't kiss his ass and never will. Damn shame I thought libs were suppose to be the tolerant ones - guess I was wrong; they are hypocrites is what they really are.

reply

Bad movies are hurting his career. The only people who care about his political views are some of the GOP ranters in this thread. Vaughn has done nothing but make awful movied for years now and the audience got fed up.

reply

The only actor I will not watch is Sean Penn, anyone else I dont really care about their politics.

reply

I will not watch Sean Penn either.

reply

Its nothing to do with politics.

Kelsey Grammar's politics was not an issue when he was in Cheers and Frasier. Suddlenly its an issue when he makes a poor show or becomes a has been!

Its that man again!!

reply

Um, I hadn't heard anything about his political views so I highly doubt it is that. Him just stating his beliefs doesn't seem like something to incite backlash. Now if he was going on tons of major news networks saying stuff, then yeah. But if he lowkeyly mentioned being a libertarian and liking Rand Paul well okay. Also, I enjoyed Delivery Man. Watched it this weekend on my flight. It was enjoyable. However, I can see people who were interested in the movie not being interested enough to see it at the movie theater. That's how I was. It looked cute, but not laugh out loud hilarious so it was one to wait and see later. Plus, yes Catching Fire was major competition.

QueenBee60,

Just as a quick FYI, while I saw that you acknowledged that there are a large number of Libertarians who are pro-gay marriage, there are also many mainstream Republicans, like myself who are too - as well as being pro-choice (those are the two 'biggies' in the social realm, anyway). I've been voting Republican in every election since '88-present, except for '96, when I voted for Clinton (2nd term). While I liked Bob Dole, who was the Repub he ran against, I felt he was a tad TOO old. And I truly believed that Clinton was a decent leader, as long as he was doing his job and not *doing* other things - or people - if you know what I mean (ugh). But I digress....

While Hollywood was always pretty liberal, don't forget that perhaps half, or at least 1/3 of the leading men in, say, the 40s, 50s and 60s were WWII Vets, and somewhat conservative (there were so many pro-America movies made during the war, as well - it kept the morale up). However, I think in the last few decades, there is a mentality in Hollywood to 'shun' those who are outwardly Republican. The ones who keep their mouths shut tend to be okay (or, they reach a certain age and don't really care; e.g., Jon Voight has been extremely critical of the Obama Administration - same with Clint Eastwood. But they've already proven themselves, you know?? (e.g., if I had wanted to become an actress, years ago, and actually had a shot at it, I would've kept MY mouth shut about my political views!! Oh well... :)
