A decent film.

This is a pretty good historical biopic. To my North American eye, it comes off a bit like a sexy Latin soap opera in places, but that's ok. The costumes, sets, locations and acting are first rate. The script is pretty historically accurate and gives a warts and all portrayal of Bolivar. It doesn't come off as worshipful, but still positive.

I saw it today on DVD, and thought it was a very good film. I wasn't aware of Simon Bolivar so it was a nice bit of history.

Saw this for the first time today. Had only head the name Simon Bolivar, didn't know too much about him. I'm sure beyond the major story points, a lot is artistic license, but it was good to see. Most period pieces we see (in the US) deal with Europe (specifically England or France), and not too often are they about South America.

I've always thought Maria Valverde is one of the most beautiful actresses there is, and this movie did nothing to change my opinion on that.

Question about the Torkington character (Danny Huston) - who or what did he represent? I got that he was from banking interests, but was it on behalf of a specific nation, or just a banking consortium? European banks? American banks? That was never clear to me.

EDIT: I went back and watched the card game where he is first introduced, and Simon refers to him as an "Englishman", so I guess that answers that.
