Basically the movie version of the twilight zone episode about the devil

I am surprised no one mentioned this, I guess nobody watches the classics anymore. But as soon as a I saw the old man trying to get them to go away I immediately thought of the twilight zone episode where a man finds a monastery while trying to escape the rain, reluctantly the head monk eventually lets him in. Inside he finds a door with someone seemingly being imprisoned and it ends with him letting the individual out and it turns out to be the devil. That was basically what this movie was, an extended version of that episode, with the devil being replaced by a witch.

Who doesn't take in 8 or more hours of the Twilight Zone marathon every year on SyFy? Anyway, yes it very well could have inspired by that episode of the TZ with the devil you mention. However, the girl in this film had to do very little convincing to the group to let her out of her box. There were some similarities, but wasn't there like hundreds of Twilight Zone episodes? I think any horror/sci-fi premise would be hard pressed to be 100% original without some influence from those classics, even if it is just coincidence.

I think what would have made this film creepier is if the super natural elements were kept to a minimum and we as an audience would have to be wondering if the old man is crazy or abusive. Maybe even kill a character or two before finding that old picture of the girl. Keep the girl crudely sexual and wise, but not displaying so much knowledge of the character’s personal lives so that we are creeped out by her but not convinced she may be what the old man claims. That last part of the film was not as strong as the first part for sure.

hehe, Twilight Zone New Years Marathon is always a classic.

I agree with you. Keeping the supernatural elements to a minimum until maybe the end, and wondering why the girl was in there versus the route they went with her being let out and killing everyone would have been more interesting.

Its was not a bad movie though, but it was just something to tide me over until Babadook and canal finally are released.

I don't remember the Twilight Zone episode, but I have read this story! It's from around the turn of the century and is a short story. Can't remember who wrote it - it's on the tip of my tongue! Maybe E.F. Benson? This is going to bug me.

Charles Beaumont (Birth Name: Charles Leroy Nutt). AKA, Charles McNutt and E.T. Beaumont. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0064579/bio

Know what I mean?

Thanks!! Guess I could have looked that up myself, lol. I was convinced it was written around the same era it was set (late 1910's), so I was poring through my collection of Edwardian lit (like a moron) instead of using this new-fangled thing called the internet.

Charles Beaumont was such a great writer!

Now I'm wondering if Rod Serling took HIS story from Beaumont...

I thought of that Twilight Zone episode too.

The difference is....that Twilight Zone episode is one of my favorites ever. And this movie is crap.

Good point about the Twilight Zone episode. I still liked the movie, better than expected, I knew nothing about it and people running around from a soul stealing witch was better than a Hand Held Exorcism (which is is what I thought it was going to be)

The episode was "the howling man", a classic. I love the twilight zone, and am glad i just learned of the NYE marathon.

if you look in itunes, you can find a bunch of twilight zone audiobooks that are really good...a bunch of B list celebs recreated the original twilight zone episodes into radio dramas. if anyone is a fan, they're definately worth checking out. great for the work commute or background noise at work.

I thought of that episode immediately, but then I'm old. It was called "The Howling Man."
