Do you read the news? There are stories of people being kidnapped and locked away all the time so of course the group would think that the man was the real bad person.

Plus, most people would have no reason to suspect that a little girl is any sort of danger to them.
If anything I think, maybe, most people would have questioned the old man... listened to what he had to say for himself rather than just gagging him to keep him quiet. Not that that would really have changed things much since she's already out of the box by then.
