Did anyone else laugh when Vonda (I think that was her name) said she had a big secret, then it showed her disrobing ... and the big secret was tanning? I don't know why, but I just got the biggest kick out of that. I kept thinking her secret was that she was a prostitute or shaved her legs (they showed a close up of her leg after she took her dress off).

In all honesty, I noticed her fake tan in the beginning of the episode. I kept thinking she was so obviously an actress if she's fake tanning. So at least this explains it... not that it negates her being a hired actress or just exaggerating her circumstances.

I thought it was a pretty stupid secret too, but I guess for her it's bigger than it would be for a kid in rumspringa. She has already joined church, so she's really breaking a rule, verses trying out the worldy lifestyle. The guy who owns the tanning bed said that the Amish keep him in business. I wonder if he meant Amish youth who are in rumspringa or older Amish who have joined church and are sneaking (breaking rules), like Vonda. Surely, her community must see that she's unnaturally tan. They have to know, but aren't that strict and overlook it. I don't blame the Amish women for tanning. Since they can't wear makeup, this gives them something. Unless someone catches them in the act or forces them to remove their clothes to look for tan lines, the Amish girl can claim that she's just been in the sun.
