My Thoughts on Bonet and Mamoa in Road to Paloma

I'm neither here to bash or praise. Just share my prespective.

I wouldn't have seen this movie if it weren't for Lisa Bonet having a role in it. I loved her on TV in the past and was feeling nostalgic so I was curious if she was involved in any recent projects and came across Road to Paloma.

Lisa Bonet hasn't changed much. I guess I was expecting a more self-assured, man-eating character. Perhaps a stereotype I've developed for maturing actresses. Her character was sweet, playful and a little awkward. She still reminds me of Denise Huxtable in that sense coupled with her youthful voice and appearance. The chemistry between Bonet and Momoa's characters reminded me of awkward, bubbly teens crushing on each other. Not a whole lot of substance, just very infatuated filled scenes from my perspective. It's not the hot, steamy rendezvous that you see a lot in movies with two attractive actors. But it was fun, no less, and I personally think the world would be a better place if more people connected in that innocent and playful way. Yes, drugs were involved but nothing hardcore, so still innocent to me. She didn't have a big role so we just skim the surface of her character. Regardless, I'm intrigued by Lisa Bonet and I would love to see more of her in movies.

Jason Momoa surprised me in that his character was the opposite of the Kahl Drogo from Game of Thrones. I wasn't sure what to expect because he has become such eye candy and some times that's a hard typecast to break away from. It's good to see he has range in his acting skills. However, we didn't learn much about his character's life prior to him being an outlaw. We caught glimpses. He was very family-oriented and very loyal to those he loved, with a very strong sense of moral duty, he was ok at fixing cars/bikes, he had a salt-of-the-earth personality, easy to befriend. Had his mother not been murdered, I'm not sure who he would've been. Did he have much to live for before his mother was murder?

The movie itself has an important message to share. Whether you liked or disliked the movie, the injustices against indigenous people are real. Native Indians aren't legends of the past, these people are alive today and continue to suffer at the hands of a government that doesn't give a crap about them. Momoa hiring indigenous actors for indigenous roles and he himself having indigenous roots were not missed on me. These people have been silenced for far too long. I'm here for their voices being heard and portrayed in an authentic way. I'm here for them reclaiming their power. You silence an oppressed people for centuries and then wonder why they resort to lashing out or sinking into a deep depression?? Those in power hide behind the guise of "do-gooders" only to so that they can protect their position in society. We see you.
