Why do all the movie snobs......

hate jump scares?? Scary movies.... jump *scares*... hello? Jump scares are awesome!!

"They're cheap substitutes for good writing." - Phooey! They augment good writing.

So what if they're not sophisticated "cinematic mechanisms". They are FUN!!

Get over yourselves and enjoy movies. That's why we watch 'em!!

The funniest jump scare is when Sam first sneaks into the bed....yeah... YIKES! Theres a hot teenage girl in my bed! super scary lol

Although I liked this movie, some of the jump scares were really cheap. The problem with most jump scares in horror movies is that they are usually fake (guy in a mask scares his friend), or it's just a shadow with a WHOOSH sound. They can be executed well if there's great buildup and an actual payoff like in Insidious or The Ring.

Get over yourself. Jump scares of the equivalent of fart jokes in comedies.

It's all about timing and never over-use them, but most horror directors don't have any measurable skill at building suspense so they turn to the old reliable jump scares for the easily amused.

Don't get me wrong. If done correctly and sparingly, jump-scares can be good but it's a rare thing these days.

I hate it only because of the jump scares, the only movie it worked in was The Grudge. If a movie has jump scares I'm rating it a 1, I don't wanna twitch involuntarily while trying to relax watching a movie, or have to sit there anticipating the next jump scare. It's like that "stuck goose bump" feeling.

Nothing in this movie makes sense. said the narcoleptic.

You watch horror movies to relax? I mean it's possible that you're just that awesome so I'll give you that just in case. However I actually watch horror movies to get scared so I'm honestly asking if you go to a theater for a horror movie or pop one in just to unwind and relax. Typically I like being kind of anxious through a horror movie or anticipating when the next scary situation is about to happen.

As far as actual jump scares go, I'm not particularly a fan of a movie with a bunch of them in it. However I do like them from time to time I suppose. For example in The Conjuring, when the witch was on top of the dresser. Well...honestly I don't know if that was meant to be a jump scare or not but it made me jump. So I suppose that doesn't count.

I can not stand cheeky jump scares for example It Follows when they were walking through that old house and a piece of the wall suddenly fell out and made a hole. Great, a loud noise in the theater just to get people to react....to a hole in the wall. Those bug the crap out of me.

In essence I kind of agree with the whole take jump scares out and we'd have a solid movie. I just don't mind one or two in a 1-2hr long movie. I do mind 9-10 in a 1-2hr long movie in the first 5 minutes. Holy *beep* stop.

Instead of building up tension, creating a great atmosphere and giving us creepiness that goes beneath the skin, we're left with 3 whole seconds of, "I wonder what's behind that -BAM-!!!. Oh, it was a cat...".

I love that kinda stuff!! Remember "Alien"?

I do remember 'Alien'!
However, 'Alien' didn't rely on these cheap tactics to get responses from the audience. Jump scares may be included, but they're not definitive. 'Alien' built terrific atmosphere, had some great characters and effects as well.

Yeah, Alien is a masterpiece which in my opinion, this isn't but I did enjoy it and I don't think it "relied" on jump cares to make it enjoyable. IMHO :0

I don't think this film could rely on anything to save it. It used a few cheap jump scares to try and relate an atmosphere it didn't bother to create. That's why I don't care for jump scares, it's too little too late, especially in this case.

I respect your opinion but I'm not changing mine :)
