New Zealand films

Why are New Zealand films so *beep* boring, and that's coming from a New Zealander

reply

I agree but the blame can be laid at the feet of the New Zealand Film Commission. They are the people with the funds but they won't fund anything likely to attract an audience. Instead it's always very PC arthouse film. The word they love most is 'worthy'.

reply

I'm not sure you're right about this. There have been loads of non-arthouse NZ movies lately. E.g. comedies (Sione's Wedding 1 & 2, Love Birds, Boy, Eagle vs. Shark), horror movies/horror comedies (What We Do in the Shadows, Black Sheep, The Devil's Rock, Wound, The Tattooist, The Ferryman, Perfect Creature), kids' fantasy movies (Under the Mountain) etc.

Not to say that these are all good movies, in fact a number of them are dreadful, but they're a good deal more diverse than you're making out. Either you've got an agenda here or you haven't actually been paying attention to the NZ movies that are getting made. Either way, you're mistaken.

reply

Many or most of those you've listed only received the barest minimum of support from the NZ film commission, if in fact they received any at all.

By law, the NZFC has a cultural remit and so will only support a certain type of project (cultural and ethnic).

Unfortunately they aren't obliged to only support films that aren't 'dreadful' and so almost everything they fund is unwatchable and results in a massive loss to the NZ taxpayers who fund it all.

reply

You're not making sense. You say that the blame for NZ movies being "boring" can be laid at the feet of the NZ Film Commission because they only fund certain kinds of movies. I list a variety of different recent NZ movies, and you say those ones aren't funded by the NZ Film Commission.

So why are they to blame for NZ films being "boring" if they have nothing to do with most of them? (I haven't investigated which specific movies received funding.)

reply

I think that is a bit of a gross generalisation.

The most recent NZ film I've seen apart from White Lies is Hunt for the Wilder People which is anything BUT boring. Very funny and rather moving.

There have been many great NZ films and some of my favourites are Heavenly Creatures, Out of the Blue, Once Were Warriors, Whale Rider, The Piano, and Smash Palace to name but a few.

I can't really agree at all, the standard of NZ film is quite high imho.
