Should I play Borderlands beforehand?
Or it isn't really necessary?

This is really one of the only sequels where I would say you SHOULD play the first, first. It isn't necessary, but it will reveal a little more about the plot.
You got to pay the troll toll to get into this boy's hole
Drat, there's another one I've played in the wrong order then.
Have to say that I don't think that it affected Borderlands 2 at all, not having played the first game. I wasn't wondering what on earth was going on (any more than I ever do at the start of something new) and the references and characters felt more like backstory than something I should know about. It wasn't until I was well in that I found out that several characters were player characters in the first game.
So I suspect that you may appreciate the game a lot more if you'd played the first but I wouldn't say that it's necessary.
Only if u plan to get borderlands anyways. If u plan on playing it, play it first. I learned the hard way playing arkham city b4 asylum. I don't like asylum as much as I would have if I played it first.
Anyways, borderlands is a good game but if u want to play to see the kind of loot then don't bcause the guns all look the same and plan too. But I still like traveling to those parts of pandora. And it's just fun
give both games a go. there's some great references from the first game implanted into the second. sure, the second is far superior, but that's not to short the original. it's one of the best games I've ever played. play both. it's so worth it.
shareThis response is a bit late so I'm sure you probably have played BL1 or 2 by now, I certainly hope so.
I played the first one long before BL2 came out and loved it.
BL2 is by far one of my top five videogames of ALL TIME. I've never had so much fun with a single game in my life and I still haven't downloaded any of the DLC yet. Seriously EPIC! You really don't need to play the first one to enjoy the second, but in some ways you might want to because it entices you to play the second. You see, the vault isn't exactly what it is in the first game, and it caused a bit of frustration with gamers, but the experience of getting there was so rewarding it didn't matter in the end.
BL2 reveals more of the Vault and takes the story and continues it with new characters (and old characters calling the shots) so you will get acquainted with Roland and the gang before they play more of their character roles in the second game.
My partner who is not as serious of a gamer as I am, never touched the first one, but fell in love with the second game so hard that he's finished it to Ultimate Vault Hunter mode and is talking about getting the DLC for the game, something he never does. It's that good.
For me, the Borderlands games deliver exceptionally in the exploration/content/l00t-wh0ring aspect^^
The story isn't exactly complicated, the writing and the scripted events/humor are where the writing really shines.
Let us not neglect to mention Cl4pTr4p - Interplanetary Ninja Assassin^^
Nothing wrong with playing the 1st one. The 2nd one however is definitely the best one in the whole series.
