Confusing ending (Spoilers!)

On the bridge at the end of the movie Joe apparently dies from his gunshot wound. Later the new employer asked the kid if he knew Joe (past tense). He said yes. Then the employer said Joe's a good man (present tense). Not he WAS a good man, but IS a good man.

Was anyone else confused by that exchange?

I didn't find anything confusing about that exchange. Joe was dead. Maybe the guy who spoke of him in the present tense was just sentimental. 

"There are too many of them. Can't kill the world."

I just watched the movie and cc on at the end and he definitely said "Joe was a good man"

He didn't. He said "Joe was a good man. A good man to me anyway."
