What will it take to save Bond movies?

Every Craig Bond movie has put me to sleep. I think brand new writers, a brand new director, and a new actor will be needed to save this franchise.

reply

Nothing complicated. They just need to get back to the traditional formula and make standalone films about one mission. Obviously new writers are needed. Purvis/Wade have been writing these crappy films since TWINE in 1999.

I expect Babs will instead try to convince Craig to come back, resort to a female or "racialized" actor when he says no, and continue down the path of the interconnected daddy issues soap saga.

A movie theater. With people in it.

reply

"How's that working out for you?"

"What?"

"Being clever."

reply

They could try making a fun spy thriller with a suave leading man, goddamn gadgets, sweeping locations, a cold-hearted villain, and a woman with a sexual innuendo for a name.

reply

now that be badass, i miss pussygalore

reply

I think they tried it already with Brosnan. TND and TWINE were so boring that I thought for a moment that bond franchise was dead for good. Then came Casino Royale and proved me wrong.

reply

Casino Royale was fantastic. Everything after that was 1000x more boring than TND and TWINE. Actually, I take that back... QOS wasn't boring, it was mind-numbing with an edit every two seconds. I couldn't watch after ten minutes.

A nice medium would be something like Dalton did. A more serious Bond, but one would cracked a smile on occasion. This Craig brooding and serious stuff is depressing.

reply

My initial reaction to Quantum of Solace was the same as everybody's. But after Skyfall and especially Spectre I've learned to appreciate its strenghts. My biggest complaint is still the editing, but otherwise I think its quite decent Bond adventure and makes me hope that they'd have continued with the Quantum criminal organization. Getting back rights for Spectre was a real unfortunate. They didn't need Spectre anymore, they were doing just fine without. It only gave some marketing boost for this one movie among long time Bond fans.

reply

What did you think about them making Blofield Bond's brother?

reply

I think it was ridiculous. Maybe the producers and writers never saw Austin Powers movie Goldmember...

reply

Yes, I'm also of the opinion that QoS is underrated while Skyfall is overrated.

What's refreshing about Quantum is that it was understated. Bond and the main female lead have strictly a working relationship. The villain's master plan is tactical rather than strategic. Bond doesn't outright kill him or execute him, but leaves him to suffer a slow, cruel death.

Skyfall looks gorgeous, but the glaring plot flaws really can't be ignored.

reply

I love QoS and the idea of Quantum. I love how they seemed to not be an evil organization of an organization of evil contacts. The did not need their own security or spy force as they just were able use whomever they influenced. Think about the police in Bolivia

Once they got SPECTRE back they could have done something great with it but did not.

My idea would have been this:

After QoS, the Quantum organization knew they were on everyone's radar so they would need to take a different tactic. You have one film where Quantum creates their own espionage group called SPECTRE to do the the things they need to have done now that they just can not have the regular authorities do it for them (too much visibility). Bond defeats them again in this film but it is a small victory.

You have a second film where the leader of SPECTRE (Blofeld) takes over Quantum by using SPECTRE because he no longer trusts the Quantum leaders anymore. Too many F ups.

reply

Dalton Bond is criminally underrated. A shame he only had a couple of goes at it.

reply

Yeah, I agree. I thought he was great in the role - IMO the closest to Fleming's vision put on film. I would have liked to have seen him do A View to a Kill and Goldeneye.

reply

Funny how Dalton's enjoyed a critical reassessment after the mess Craig and co. have made of the series.

reply

Holy shit. That might just work. Or...they could do the complete fucking opposite and wonder why no one goes to see it and watch the entire franchise circle the pan.

It winds me up. You have a tried and tested formula that has scope for small tweaks here and there but no. They just throw it all away.

reply

Nothing. The Craig films are fine. The problem is constantly rebooting the franchise and no real danger to bond has made these movies boring and predictable. Major franchise fatigue. They need to finally end these films. Or at the very least not make anymore for 20 years. People are just tired of them i think.

reply

I don't think most people are tired of them. People love the formula....the fantasy....the escape. Getting tired of Bond films would be like getting tired of Pizza. It just doesn't happen.

When Craig is done (and it sounds like this is his last).....who they find will be a maker or a breaker. Craig has been great....and Casino Royale was brilliant in every way. Now...they need to find someone nobody has seen or heard of. A diamond in the ruff. And none of this woke shit. Bond is a white, British male, period. Women will continue to dominate the action genre in films and TV for quite a while now, with that being the agenda with studios and production companies. They will continue all being karate experts, throwing men around like ragdolls...to the point where it just becomes silly. I get it....we want our daughters to not grow up feeling inferior to men; feeling they can do absolutely everything men can do and more.....to the point where the pendulum has swung too far the other way, and too hard and fast. That's fine.....continue the pandering....because it has been SO extreme that most people shake their heads in disbelief at being condescended to.

But Bond.....don't eff with the formula. He CAN remain a womanizer in a woke generation. He CAN be inappropriate and strong and an alpha in a generation bent on retiring the white, alpha male. Dare to go against the grain and keep Bon the way he has always been. (Deep down...even WOMEN don't want Bond to be a pussy).

But it all comes down to finding someone we all really like. Someone with fantastic screen presence and charisma. Make sure he has charm and humor...but also has the chops for drama and action (and romance). If they can find lightning in a bottle (similar to how Connery wowed us)....there's plenty they can do with modern storylines and locales.

Find just the right guy.....be clever with how they tease us with the reveal....get a budget on par with the Mission Impossible movies....and we'll be fine.

Keep the new actor's identity a secret for as long as possible....teasing with a magazine ad or poster with his silhouette, or him sitting at a gaming table, face hidden in shadow. Keep people guessing. They could really have fun with the build-up for the next film...because the curiosity factor will be high.

reply

The Mission Impossible films are actually much better than most bond films from the last 20-25 years. I look forward to each one like I used to for Bond. I dont think it will be a reboot franchise like Bond has been.

reply

A good point. So were the first two Kingsmen movies.

reply

Haven't seen those yet. I will check them out.

What will it take to save Bond movies?

This to flop, or the next movie to flop, only when they start to lose serious money will they find the right people for 007. But I don't expect that to happen anytime soon.

reply

Maybe an R rated one?

reply

That would be interesting.

reply

Immediately disavow everything that will happen in the new movie since its supposedly "woke". It's going to fail in spectacular fashion and after that it can get back to origins of the franchise.

Last year I listened to the audiobook version of Roger Moore's book, Bond on Bond (a must-read/listen if you're a bond fan. He narrated it himself for the audiobook).
He mentioned a fact that even up to his time as Bond, a lot of the locations were considered far off or exotic because travel was much more expensive back then. It gave people an extra excuse to come and see a Bond film.
