Thoughts on New Trailer?

https://www.theverge.com/2019/12/4/20995060/james-bond-no-time-to-die-trailer-daniel-craig-rami-malek

Its a nice trailer, as they usually are. Some nice moments that get you excited for the new movie. It did raise some thoughts / issues for me. Blofeld has turned into Hannibal from Silence of the Lambs.

I have a bad feeling that we are going to see too much of Lynch's 00 character (please Jesus don't let her take over 007). A sidekick is fine as we have seen other female agents alongside James Bond in such movies as Die Another Day, The Spy Who Loved Me, and Tomorrow Never Dies. But for the love of god please don't give her a bunch of screen time. This is a James Bond movie, lets not go woke, go broke.

In the trailer Lynch says "stay in your lane". This is the most cringe worthy line in Bond movie history right after Jynx says "Yo moma" in Die Another Day. Yuck.

As usual with Craig movies, NTTD is bringing up too much personal crap. Swann is going to betray Bond for some reason, and half the movie is going to be about that instead of the mission.

I fully expect Craig to to continue the tradition of James Bond actors going out with their worst movie (Connery, Moore, Brosnan).

I think it's dreadful. The trailer doesn't really matter, but I can't understand how anyone could watch this and be excited. It's basically the same trailer as for Spectre. A lot of fast cuts and mysterious dialogue that makes no sense out of context. But it's clear that this is another direct continuation from previous films. A lot of the shots are identical too, such as the wintery scenes and the shot where Bond is exposed in a huge crowd by the spotlight which is the same thing as when he was exposed at the secret meeting in Spectre.

reply

As a huge fan of Bond movies, I am always excited for a new to be released, no matter how bad a gut feeling I have it will be or how much stupid shit has been leaked out. We have all grown tired of Craig's Bond, the continuation of all his films, and all the personal BS and feelings that go on in his Bond movies.

reply

You're going to watch this opening day regardless, right?

reply

Yes. I am hoping it isn't as bad as we all fear it is.

reply

Well, we all look forward to your report.

reply

I certainly won't be. It's come to the point where I will be actively seeking out spoilers on the internet to see if all my worst fears about this picture are confirmed. If not, then I'll go to the cinema a week after the opening and give it a chance. But if so, then I'll download it. There's no way I'm paying money if Lashana Lynch is Agent 007, if Bond marries Madelyn, if Rami Malek was "the author of all your pain," if there is "trademark feminist humour" in the script, or if Bond dies.

reply

I share the same concerns as you. Littlefinger is an avid Bond fan and I respect his interests and we all hope for a good movie. Appearances don't fare well for it, but maybe it won't be too woke. We can only hope.

reply

I am worried it will suck regardless of the woke stuff. I absolutely hate Skyfall and Spectre which aren't 'woke' from what I remember, and Skyfall in particular received inexplicable critical acclaim. They were just shitty Daniel Craig movies with incoherent plots and "this time it's personal." I hate episodic film series with strict continuity and 'cinematic universes'.

reply

Again, I share the exact same concerns as you. I agree with you about Skyfall and Spectre. I did like the opening action sequence in Skyfall, but it was all downhill from there. What else is there to look forward to?

reply

This time it will be personal. That's what you can look forward to. We'll finally find out who the author of all his pain really is.

In all seriousness, I would expect a crazy plot twist that retcons the entire Craig era (again) and renders CR and even the inexplicably loved Skyfall pointless. I can't wait to see the hipster bandwagon Craig fanboys finally turn on their idol when their beloved Skyfall gets retconned and gets tossed to the dustbin of history.

reply

How many authors can James Bond have for all his pain? Lol. Why does it always have to be personal for Craig's Bond? Why is he always coming out of retirement?

reply

I agree with your sentiment. Bond is a just a spook in MI6. He shouldn't be so well known where villains are keying in on him specifically. That in itself makes the villains' motivations kind of stupid.

reply

Looks awful. I wish they'd cut the melodrama from these "Bond" / BINO films and go back to just making actual Bond films.

Didn't see Spectre and won't be going to see this either. No matter though I guess as plenty of pre-Craig era classics to rewatch.

reply

I'm getting a bit tired of re-watching classics. It would be nice to get a new Bond film that is actually decent for the first time in years.

reply

Somehow I didn't notice that atrocious CGI dropkick in my first viewing. There's no way a woman of that size and body shape would be able to do a dropkick with that much speed and intensity. Most professional athletes couldn't even do that. Fuck, this movie is going to suck.

reply

I thought it was absolutely amazing. I literally loved every second of it.

reply

Me too, can't wait for April.

reply

Even the 73rd second?

reply

After watching it the first time, I was stoked, gotta admit! Looked mostly great! Second watch-through, I see many things I like, some I definitely don't. I agree with a post below that the "stay in your lane" line better get cut from the final film. I understand the push for female empowerment, but I don't really like that we see two women kicking ass in the trailer, but only one man. We need to remember that Bond was clearly recruited from SAS or SBS. From there, he needs to pass recruitment of some sort to become 00. This suggests, if one looks at real life scenarios, that some or many SAS or SBS persons would fail the tests, both physical and combat-related. How does a woman pass these when it is common knowledge that they are not allowed into these types of service (ie: SAS and SBS)? However, I know one or two pretty badass women, and a few can actually fight a bit, just not at the level this film shows.

I don't like that she is 007 now and I never will, but I get it. They needed to fill the spot and he left. I don't like the continued connection to Bond's past somehow (with emotional content), but it does fit Craig's series enough that I won't complain too much. Plus, they had to get rid of the prior Bond girl somehow.

I like the cinematography so far. I like that the trailer appears to show more action than the somewhat dull (by comparison to other Bond films) Spectre, I liked some of the stunts featured, and I like Rami Malek enough to be intrigued by his villain (yes, Phantom of the Opera comparisons aside, could be interesting). Also glad they brought Blofeld back (not because I enjoyed his performance / character in Spectre, but because to not bring him back somehow would play out like Dark Knight Rises not mentioning the Joker in any way - just felt wrong and actually hurt the plot). Also, as a gun guy, loving that they appear to have brought back the HK 416!

Overall, with second viewing, still excited, but cautious. I'll see it!

reply

Stay in your lane was awful, agreed it needs to be cut! Bond was recruited from the royal Navy, he still gets called Commander Bond time from time. Bond has left MI6 before and was never replaced. This is just a pathetic woke moment. This connection crap with the past and to each movie needs to end after this one. Go back to standalone Bond movies.

reply

I agree with everything you said in that, and you are right, he was Royal Navy. I'd forgotten that. However, I do wonder if SAS or SBS could recruit from the navy. In fact, the SBS is within the Royal Navy (yay google!). That point stands.

I'm also ok, in this case, with the connection crap, as you put it. I would never have done it myself, and totally agree that we need to go back to standalone, but because of the way Craig's series has gone, we might as well continue it in some way. Though personally I still HATE the whole "I am the architect of your pain" angle. They should NOT be related in any way!

reply

Blofeld being Bond's step brother is also cringe. Brofeld!

reply

Brofeld! Love it! Totally agree, I hated that! Still, Spectre has two amazing moments in the Bond series, so I don't hate the movie. 1: The opening scene and long take is great all the way through. Love it! 2: Train fight was probably top 3 hand-to-hand fights in the series, right up there with Russia w/ Love train fight and 007 v. 006 at the end of Goldeneye. Hoping we get something as good in the new one!

reply

Pre credit title sequence was awesome in Spectre. Thats about all I enjoyed of it

reply

Not Craig's Bond. He strictly SAS. (Casino Royale).

He has not been referred to as Commander in these movies.

It was all part of the 're-invention' of the character.

The literary version and the previous cinema versions refer to his Naval background. Roger Moore's version was called Commander Bond frequently IIRC.

reply

What does SAS mean?

reply

I liked everything in the trailer except the villain in the Phantom of the Opera mask.

If Lynch is 007, it will be in the beginning of to movie until Bond returns. Not sure why this is such a big deal to people....

reply

I agree

They showed too much?

In this timeline, how long has Bond been a double 0? This chick says she's a double 0 for 2 years and tell him to stay out of her lane? Wouldn't the obligatory Brit response to that be, "Piss off!"?

Personally, as that is the very first introduction we get to her character, she comes off as a dick. Again, my anticipation is the script is going to "try too hard" to make her cool and tough. Unlike Naomi Harris' Moneypenny, who I actually like and liked how she was brought in.

I like the DB5, the Bond girls (we're not on set) are hot, the locales look cool, I like Ralph Fiennes as M, Naomi Harris as Moneypenny, but it looks very much like Spectre, which I wasn't impressed with. It's going to be a pass.

reply

Guessing she's saying "stay out of her lane" because Bond has been out of the service for a number of years. Still, no such dialogue should be in a James Bond movie, especially being said to James Bond. I don't how long James Bond has been 007 in this universe. CR came out in 2006, I guess he got his 00 status that year, he left MI6 after the events of Spectre in 2015... so 9 years? Pure guess.

reply

Which makes him 7 years her elder. Any veteran deserves respect because experience can never be discounted. As like all Tom Cruise movies, she might be the brash youngster that gets humbled and turns out wiser in the end. It's really going to depend on how her character is developed in the movie. If she's just an in your face bad ass, she won't be liked like all the others before her. I'd give the character the benefit of the doubt, but still it looks too much like Spectre and that movie disappointed me.

reply

Craig's pathetic Bond seems to be off duty more often than he's on duty because "this time it's personal" or something, so it's conceivable that two consecutive years of experience as a 00 means that Nomi is significantly more experienced than Bond is. It's sad and pathetic.

CraigBond needs personal leave for family therapy with Brother Brofeld. Don't expect too much of him.

If what you say is true, I have the perfect response for that.
