I copypaste my reply from the Lashana Lynch forum, where the same question was asked:

It's a religious thing*

When you're a producer and you're blackwashing main characters to prove your virtue, to prove you're inclusive, to prove you're a good believer in diversity, the casting needs to reflect your devotion.

Imagine for a moment that they casted an attractive or a charismatic female lead. How that proves your devotion? Maybe you casted her because she was charismatic, and that case your devotion would be unclear, your faith would remain unproven.

BUT... if you cast an ugly chick, if you cast Lashana Lynch as 007, if you cast Halle Bailey as the Little Mermaid, if you cast Anna Diop as Starfire... then it must be true faith, because the only way you would have casted those chicks in those roles is because you're a good believer in diversity. Then you have proven your devotion, and as a producer, you have proven yourself deserving to be accepted as part of the flock, Diversity bless you.

History repeats. We're just watching a new cult rise and spread.
