Personally, I don’t care. I have no personal investment in what a 007 agent or a Jedi or whatever looks like on screen.
The extreme reactions on this board, however, are pretty interesting.
It seems like people think it’s somehow more acceptable to say they object to Bond’s sex than his race.

I admit, once I heard the news this morning, I was filled with rage but now I have calmed down. I have realised that this was just another Elitist attempt to anger me and I fell for it. So now, I dont care what they do with Bond, Superman, Batman, or any other white character just to spite the "masters" and not play their game. I aint their puppet. And hopefully you arent too buddy. Embrace this news however you see fit, just dont react to it negatively. This is what "they" want.
I will sit back and wait to see where this world is heading to!

Both of them. James Bond is a very specific character, that represents the archetypical phlegmatic male British character. So you need an actor that could pass for a typically male British character.
It's not about race, it's about ehtnic cultural group. An Italian James Bond shouting 'prego, preeeego!!' wouldn't work neither. But the thing is: an Italian actor can simulate being a typically British character, a black actor can't. You can fake the gestures, the bearing, you can fake the accent (if you're good enugh), but you can't fake your race, or your gender, or your age.
So an actor can fake being an alien, a pilot, a cop, a doctor, but can’t fake being “British”? Lol

My emotional attachment to movie characters is obviously not as strong as some because I couldn’t give a toss if a white actor plays a traditionally black character or vice versa. Who cares? It’s just a movie.
