I think those days are behind us. Forever. People love serialized stories. All them Potter, Pirates and Fast movies have proven that's where the money is at. Even Mission Impossible now is going that route. It's arguably the greatest strength of the Bourne films. I think the era of standalone movies itself is history. James Cameron stated the Avatar sequels will be standalone, but we all know that's total BS. They may be complete stories unto themselves, but they're all going to be connected.

The entire appeal to me of Bond as a character is he's a workman, it's just his job. He wakes up, put's on his suit and tie, heads to the office, and has no idea what kind of hornet's nest he will be getting dropped into. It's never personal. It's the essence of the character and they've lost it completely.
