Ebert's commentary on Criterion Collection Laserdiscs

He did several of Commentaries on a handful of Criterion Collection film releases - mostly on the Laserdisc issues. Anybody collected any?

Citizen Kane, Close Encounters, Lawrence of Arabia and 2001: A Spacr Odyssey to name a few. Some never got to the DVD releases due to copyright ownership.

I've heard his commentaries on Citizen Kane and Dark City, which were both on DVD. I believe that he also has one on Casablanca. Those are all I know of.

I've only heard the one on Dark City (not a Criterion release), but I'd love to listen to more.

His commentary on Citizen Kane is the best I've ever heard. I remember it enhancing my appreciation for the film as a teenager. Casablancas is also great, but you could tell Kane was his #1 film based on just how informative the entire thing was.

I have the Dark City DVD but never listened to the commentary on it. Should do that soon.

I wish he would have recorded one for The Third Man.

What Would Gibson Do?

reply

Yup, the Kane commentary is one of the best ever done! I never noticed what he talked about at the very beginning with the window light at Xanadu.

His track for Casablanca was equally great too. I've been a huge fan of that film for yrs, read a lot about it & the production & he still came up with factoids & insightful points I didn't know about.

Others I'd like to have seen him do: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Third Man (that was a great suggestion!), White Heat, The Asphalt Jungle & especially Some Like it Hot.

I love those commentaries he did. I would have been funny if he recorded one for the original I Spit on Your Grave.
