Self-induced Abortion Scene

My goodness!
It has to be the most disturbing scene I have ever seen. When people talk about the most disturbing scene they have ever seen, they usually say something like the fire extinguisher scene from Irreversible or baby scene from A Serbian Film, etc. I'm surprised that no one ever talks about this scene.

I totally agree. I can't think of many scenes that made me cringe and wince as much as this one did. It was really hard to watch.

reply

Jeez....I must be so jaded! I don't even REMEMBER such a scene.

.

It's in the extended director's cut.

What method does she choose? In If These Walls Could Talk, Demi Moore (showing her first glimmer of actual acting ability) uses a knitting needle. In The Other Side of Midnight, the heroine straightens out a coat hanger in a hot bath.

I don't know why any grownup would thing these approaches would work. You're just going to perforate yourself badly!!

I hate to describe such a scene. Here's the link where you can watch the entire scene:

I haven't yet seen Irreversable or A Serbian Film (I do think I have the DVD's, just don't know where they are), but yes, that scene was SO hard to watch.

I have my things -- eyes and nails, lol, and did close my eyes once during Ichi the Killer, but this scene, I just well, felt it? IMO Charlotte is a FABULOUS actress, it wasn't just the process, it was her face and sounds, just got me to the core.

reply

I'm also a big fan of Charlotte's. She's brilliant and I love her in all of LVT's movies. Perfection. I think she's so beautiful, I adore her voice, her mannerisms, everything. I could listen to her speak for hours and hours....

I just watched Parts 1 and 2 on Netflix and I saw,...nothing. There was nothing particularly shocking about this movie, so I'm gathering they cut a whole lot out. A whole lot!

As far as this scene goes, I agree with you that it's Charlotte's acting ability that conveys the depth of this procedure. What made it easier for me to identify with what was going on, was the imaging that was used to demonstrate at what stage the fetus was affected by what she was doing. Otherwise, let's face it, all we're seeing are various instruments being inserted. It's her acting, the visceral application, and the conjunction of context that demonstrates what's going on.

A final point, I'm not sure, but it looked like when the fetus was expelled that it was trying to breathe. I do not know enough to know if this is an accurate representation of reality, but personally, I think that's the moment I had the hardest time with.

But I did find myself making all sorts of wincing faces while watching this 4 minute segment of the deleted scenes.

You must not have seen the director's cut. It was on netflix too. But I doubt you'll be in too much of a hurry to rewatch, they are LONG.

I think you are right about the fetus, and that's IMO not possibly real, since it's hard for full term babies to start breathing, and preemies, that's the worry, is are their lungs developed enough.

You're right, the scene itself was all Charlotte. And the cuts. It wasn't gore, it just hurt like hell to watch.

I saw the second part of Nympho and really enjoyed the film. I know this is the directors cut and I saw just saw the scene (thanks for the link!) and also found it quite moving and disturbing but can anyone explain who the father was or the scenes leading up to this or why she did it herself?

Go back to NOT AMERICA you freak! Lars Von Trier has mommy issues. You & Roman Polamski hopefully can do couples therapy and cure yourselves.

I've seen almost all of the 'disturbing' movies but I think that was the most horrific scene I've seen to date.
