Huntsman' Love for Snow White totally overlooked?

So just saw the Huntsman & am really upset that in the first movie we saw a great love develop between Snow White & the Huntsman & hello he even brought her back from death by true loves kiss, yet in this movie it's like "Snow White who" to the Huntsman! WTH!?! Yes I understand she wasn't actually in the film but she was mentioned quite a bit & so should his love for her from the first film have been addressed. Just hate that all of the love he developed for her in the first movie was totally forgotten. Sorry if this I already a topic as I looked through first few pages & didn't find a discussion on this.

I agree. That's my big problem with this movie not having Kristen Stewart/Snow White in this film was a huge mistake. That was the catalyst for even considering to make a sequel was that moment where The Huntsman's kiss, not The Prince's wakes her up. I wanted more follow up on that front. I didn't want to see more journeys of the Huntsman without her or the reappearance of his "not dead" wife. That was another big problem. Jessica Chastain was miscast with that part her and Hemsworth had zero chemistry (IMO).

Here's hoping they will make a true sequel to SWATH and rectify all the issues with this second film. Perhaps THWW was all a dream? A bad one!

reply

Bringing back Revenna and Sarah from their deaths in SWATH did not work. And I do not see the logic in making a Snow White fairy-tale prequel/sequel without the Snow White character. Surveys of SWATH's movie patrons indicated 48% of SWATH viewers went to that movie to see Kristen Stewart (at the apex of her worldwide popularity) portray Snow White. Thus cutting out the Snow White character (for whatever reason) basically cut THWW's potential audience base in half right from the start. Then contriving a script to work around Snow White's absense in a strange before her -- after her world, undermined further potential viewership.

THWW is currently on course to earn roughly $160 million in worldwide revenue. With a production cost of $115 million, excluding advertising, losses will be substantial. Producing any more sequels from this franchise appears highly unlikely.

They worked around snow white because Kristen Stewart is terrible. How can you not see that. The biggest mistake they made in the first place was casting her in the first place. Your totally right in that they were banking on her Bella fame, but word of mouth on how horrible she was almost stopped them from making the second one anyway. Face it Stewart is garbage in the acting dept. She"s not bad to look at but that's it. It made me so mad when they cast her cause I knew she wouldn't learn how to act overnight and I love the story. When she recites "death favors no man" and then gives that weak speech I wanted to punch her in the face. It was terrible. And to think they could of had Alicia Vikander, Saoirse Ronan, Riley Keough, Felicty Jones, and Dakota Fanning who I couldn't see as Snow White personally but at least she can act. I would of loved to see Bella Heathcoat who was also in the mix but they went with as they call it "The Name" regardless of acting prowess. I think it obvious now that it was the wrong choice as all the other actresses are at the moment well regarded while all Stewart can hold on to is Bella to which she sucked it also but you can't tell that to the tweeners.

reply

I could not agree more! I am so wanting to pretend Huntsman didn't happen! LOL

reply

Your kidding right? Kristen Stewart was terrible in this movie. What an expressionless horrible acting job she did. Not a great big fan of Hemsworth but he ran laps around Stewart in the acting dept. Stewart sucks Charlize stole the show as a supporting actress. She made Stewart look like she needed more acting classes. Chastain was definitely miscast Stewart was the one that was miscast way back in the first installment. Absolutely zero chemistry between Hemsworth and Stewart.Sorry Tricia no one likes Bella.

reply

*Chastain was definitely not miscast*

reply

No, it's not. The entire movie is a sequel with only the first minutes of the movie showing the past of the Huntsman (before he met Snow White).

reply

Approximately the first 26 minutes of THWW take place prior to the events depicted in SWATH. The narrator then states, "Days turn to years." Every scene thereafter then takes place following the events in SWATH. So the first 1/4 of this picture, by most definitions, is a prequel. The remaining 3/4 is a sequel. You may label that any way you wish.

Rest in peace, Roger Ebert. You were the best.

reply

I don't agree with the "prequel" classification. What we have in this movie is simply a flashback of the Huntsman's life before he meets Snow White with the intent of setting up the events of the rest of movie.

Flashbacks are common and they don't mean we are looking at a prequel. This movie is a fully fledged sequel.

For what its worth, since we're talking semantics, here's Wikipedia's characterization of THWW:

"The Huntsman: Winter's War (also known as The Snow White Chronicles - The Huntsman: Winter's War) is a 2016 American high fantasy adventure film and acts as both a prequel and sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman, based on the characters from the German fairy tale 'Snow White' compiled by the Brothers Grimm, as well as 'The Snow Queen' by Hans Christian Andersen."

Ravenna only became Queen because she married Snow Whites father...and Ravenna murdered him on their wedding night..so Snow would have had to be in prison while most of this was taking place.

reply

My response to rereboy-903-525228 had to do with prequel/sequel descriptive terminology as it apply's (or doesn't) to THWW. isundling, were you possibly responding to a different post?

Rest in peace, Roger Ebert. You were the best.

reply

Sorry...I guess to Wip325 who posted that 3/4th of the last part of this movie was a sequel...I have not seen the movie, but Snow White killed Ravenna at the end of the first movie..so what??????????

reply

Nope the 7 years later part in Huntsman takes place AFTER Snow White had killed Ravenna & become queen. Therefore takes place after the end of the first movie.

reply

Agreed! I think that the pretty much falsely advertised this movie as a total prequel & then we actually see it & its sequel that can hardly be called a true sequel because they pretty much attempt to erase any of the truths & premise of the first film.

reply

Yeah sorry DUDE you obviously didn't see the movie because if you had you would know the majority of the film is a sequel.

reply

I was upset and disappointed when I heard about this, it actually killed my interest in going to see this movie. This movie completely diminishes the relationship with Snow and the Huntsman in the first movie along with the impact his kiss had in wakening her. It gets worst in that she ended up with William, a lesser developed character that I could care less about compared to the Huntsman who had more growth as a character and more meaningful interactions with Snow. I'm glad this movie is turning into a financial failure; it'll be easier to pretend its not apart of the first movie.

I know we're not perfect, but the safest hands are still our own. - Captain America

reply

I agree. I am not a fan of Kristin but I did enjoy the first movie. I didn't like that they just rewrote the love Eric had for Snow. It was his kiss that awakened her. It ruined this movie for me.

reply

The romance with Sara did not bother me as he never really loved Snow in the first movie. I always felt it was forced and that he still loved his wife and that the kiss on Snow shouldn't even have worked because his supposed love for her was not believable. So it makes sense that he a Snow did not have a relationship in this film and that Snow was the sole ruler without the Huntsman as her husband.

reply

I believe he did actually love her. As the spell to wake her had to be broken by 'true love's kiss' and not by some guy that is forced too.

I felt it more odd that almost immediately after seeing Sara again for the first time he starts acting like a jerk to her. It is completely against his character's development in SWATH. His only reason to track Snow White was to get Ravenna to bring Sara back to life, and once he learns that he helps Snow. Its also stated in the first film that Sara was killed while the Huntsman was away at war, and that was changed for this film.

reply

I agree, I don't think he actually loved her in a true romance way. I think it was more of a friendship and respect thing. As a lowly huntsman it was always unlikely that Snow White would end up with him anyway.

What do you mean though when you say that "I felt it more odd that almost immediately after seeing Sara again for the first time he starts acting like a jerk to her". How did he act like a jerk?

reply

Yeah, they spell wasn't completely clear with the 'True Love' part, as love doesn't have to be in a romantic way. Or even that they had to be each others true love. And I do agree that I didn't see them actually ending up together either. Also no one knows it was his kiss that woke her up, as he was alone in the room with her and he walked away before she woke up. As far as anyone else is aware it was the Prince's kiss that did it, and it took a long time to take affect.

And I felt he was acting like a bit of a jerk with the smart ass remarks that started almost immediately after seeing Sara. I understand they did that in order to have more laughs for us, but I would think after seeing that your dead wife is actually alive for the first time in 7 years, that he wouldn't start making jokes.

reply

I don't think he's saying that there wasn't supposed to be a romance between the two. The problem is Kristen Stewart can not act so he like myself never believed in such a thing. Had they gotten a real actress in the beginning the wouldn't have had to scrap their original story which had already been written in hopes of favorable reviews but Kristen sucked as she does 98 percent of the time so that was that and they had to write around her. Nothing says you suck more than getting your character nixed without her dying. They had to bring Charlize from the dead for the second one for which they hadn't planned for. Kristens best acting job to date is the 12 seconds she gets when she answers the door at the end of Jumper. Lol

reply

then why did he kiss her at all? and if it's a friend's love as people are trying to excuse it as then why on the lips? becuz people like romance and they were trying to make people like it? I like KS. So I wouldnt have gone to see this movie since I knew she wasnt in it. it was advertised as a prequel. and if it was a matter of her being casted out for whatever reason they could have simply casted somebody else in the part. they do it all the time. Anyway, I tried to enjoy this movie by trying to ignore the fact that it had anything to do with the first movie. Most of the movie it didnt work and what are they planning since they threw in that after credits flash of things to come?

reply

Something entirely overlooked was that the first movie made it look like Ravenna's creepy brother had slain the Huntsman's wife.

reply

Finn wasn't exactly the most trustworthy guy. So it appears he said that just to taunt Eric, before he planned to kill him.

reply

Mhmh. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I couldn't know right now; however, I don't think I would get taunted by someone claiming to have done something I perfectly know they haven't done.

reply

That's just another continuity error. Two movies have quite a few of them.

reply

In my opinion, the first movie really confused people with that kiss. Where people see the relationship between Snow White and the Huntsman as being "true love" is beyond me. I don't think that they were in love, and I don't think that he was in love with her. I never got even an inkling that the Huntsman was in love with Snow White. Of course, I have only seen the extended version. I'm not sure if it is presented differently in the theatrical version or not, but in the version I saw, he was not in love with her and she certainly wasn't in love with him. He spent the entire first movie in various states of drunkenness while pining for his dead wife the whole time and acting like a complete jerk. I think Snow White reminded him of his wife, but that doesn't mean he loved Snow White, just that he greatly missed and loved his wife. Snow White and William clearly loved one another in the true sense of the word. William made his love more evident, but Snow White didn't exactly deny her feelings either. The Huntsman and Snow White spend the majority of the movie at odds with one another, mostly him insulting her. He eventually grows to respect and admire Snow White, after learning who she is and what she will eventually do for the kingdom. Snow White eventually gains respect for the Huntsman as well, because he saved her life and because he is helping her get to safety. Mutual respect (and eventual friendship) does not equal true romantic love.

Think about it...when Ravenna tricks Snow White into biting the poisoned apple, does she disguise herself as Eric/the Huntsman? No. She disguises herself as William, and after she succeeds in poisoning Snow White, she says "You see, child. Love always betrays us..." meaning she used Snow White's love for William to trick her. And it worked. When William kisses her and she doesn't wake up, that doesn't mean that he doesn't love her. It just means that this version of the story put a twist on it. And when the Huntsman kisses Snow White and she wakes up, that doesn't mean that he loves her or that she loves him. When he kisses her, he is thinking and speaking of Sarah. Sarah is his true love. I think it was not just the feelings but also the tears that he shed onto her skin that helped awaken her. To me, it is obvious that William loves Snow White and feels true heartbreak when she dies in his arms. Or maybe neither kiss worked, and Snow White just happened to wake up on her own after being kissed by Eric...pure coincidence. Or maybe it takes two kisses from two hot guys to wake a princess up from a cursed slumber. Who can really say?

Additionally, I felt that Kristen Stewart had a lot more real chemistry with Sam Claflin than she did with Chris Hemsworth. Like I said before, where people get the love thing between Snow White and Eric is beyond me. I simply don't see it. I guess I can see how and why they set it up that way (because Chris Hemsworth is hot, though not any hotter than Sam Claflin, imho). Of course, in the traditional story of Snow White, the Huntsman doesn't kill her because feels sorry for her as she begs for her life and eventually leaves her alive in the woods, thinking some wild animal will kill her so he doesn't have to....
