why this movie failed...

Its a stupid movie in general but the main problem is this.... Okay well there is two problems. First off Margot Robbie has this air head who doesn't know how to be sexy is ridiculous. I don't know if shes a bad actress, hasn't done enough yet. Im stilling holding out hope for Suicide Squad. She is insanely hot though.

Uh anyway, moving right along, the main problem is this. This is nothing we haven't seen a million times before.

Matchstick Men with Nicholas Cage and Sam Rockwell
Confidence with Ed Burns and Dustin Hoffman
Criminal with John C Riley

and going way back

House of Games with Joe Mantegna and Lindsay Crouse

And im sure im missing about 1000 others.

The point is, they are probably fun movies to make. mean what actor doesn't want to play a smooth talking criminal. And its probably fun for writers to think of all this snappy dialogue and all the different cons.

But we've just seen it all to many times before.

Not everybody has seen all those movies before though? Plus I think that could reasonably be a genre kind of thing rather than an "they're all the same!" kind of thing. There's plenty of room for a lot more con/heist movies.

To me the main problem was the movie went too many different directions. They did a half-assed job on the makings of at least 3 different movies, when they could have dialled in and done an exceptional job telling ONE story. I think Cocktail starring Tom Cruise had the same problem.

Just pick a story and tell it! Imo that's why this film failed. Personally I'd like to see more con movies.

It cost 50 million to make and made 159 million worldwide.

what's your point.

Pearl Harbor made a killing, but still no one liked it.

When people say a movie "failed" they usually mean financially, if they didn't like it they usually say something along the lines of "why thins movie sucked." My mistake, I guess.

reply

If every movie that cost $50 mil. to make and made over 3x the cost and no one liked them, Hollywood would be churning them out constantly. It's all about the $$$$.

reply

I liked Pearl Harbor.

It's pretty obvious it's the blatant, in your face interracial relationship that pissed people off and turned them off the film. If Will Smith had a female co-star of another ethnicity it could have done better.

After all... tomorrow is another day.

Screen:
What was "blatant" and "in your face" about it? The physical relationship between the two is shown in a low key way--it wasn't "shoved" in anybody's face. Why don't you just admit that it pissed you off and turned you against the film? And that you're just racist, anyway? I didn't see a damn thing wrong with it, because this is the 21st century, and people should be the hell over being racist against interracial couples at this point and time. And they should be used to seeing them---they're a regular, normal part of America, thank you very much (I see them all the time, and there's interracial couples in my family, too, so seeing a mixed couple in FOCUS wasn't any big deal to me.) The film was also a big hit, so your little fake, tired analysis didn't make any damn sense and wasn't true at all.

100% agree with you sleepingtiger. Sadly many of all races still think this way actually calling the ones that like other races the racist against their own people. It's really sad. Especially that they teach their kids this when they reach a certain age. In my neighborhood it's mostly Hispanics. Many who think this way and I know that because of what my nieces have had to deal with when trying to make friends as they've gotten older over the years.

Kids that were good friends with them for a while no longer being able to play with them just because they're not Hispanic. All because the parents don't want their boys to even consider thinking about dating them.

Which is why The Bodyguard was such a bomb.

Movie stars put butts in seats, and Robbie was (and maybe still is) the it-girl. I expected this to be mediocre, but still watched it in part because she's gorgeous.

reply

This movie is incredibly boring. Smith and Robbie are on screen too much and their chemistry is flat, with few supporting characters to really mix things up a bit and play off someone else. Just a slow paced boring movie.
