Interracial

I always love interracial propaganda. Give me more

This really happens, playa.

The movie disappointed so I doubt there will be a rush to do more films with an interracial element. It didn't help the movie and likely hurt it in certain areas of the country.

reply

It does seem like the interracial aspect hurt it, at least the movie studio seems to think so. Over the last week, there has been a shift in the tone of the previews. The love interest and sexuality between Smith and the girl is no longer in the previews on television, the previews now have an "Oceans 11" feel to them.

reply

They should've known better. You can go to any message board or comment section anywhere on the internet and find a slew of racist comments directed toward the black subject, even if race isn't the topic of the video. THe US is very racist and race-obsessed. THey were naive to think that featuring a stunningly beautiful blue-eyed blonde with a black man wouldn't put people off. Many people are still very uncomfortable with interracial relationships.

reply

I don't think people are uncomfortable with interracial relationships, it's just black men and white women they are uncomfortable with. And I'm not sure America is really anymore racist than other countries. Look at France. It's not like America has a Le Pen forcing runoffs in their elections.

The film was a big hit (plus it was a damn good film to begin with) do your research----only a handful of people like you even cared about the fact that it was an interracial couple. Yeah, some people hate the idea of interracial relationships, but that's their damn problem. Times and attitudes toward interracial relationships have changed, and they're more the norm than anything now.

They had to be aware that it could have a negative impact in some or many circles.
I had thought they made the movie in spite of any possible backlash to the interracial coupling.
I thought they were being daring.

michealexarkun:

Apparently it wasn't as big of a deal as you're making it out to be, because the movie got made (mainly because of Smith, who co-produced it, I believe) and it was a hit. So basically, nobody really cared that much about the interracial aspect except you and a couple of other folks on the board.

Was race an issue in ‘Hitch’ casting?
Feb. 23, 2005

Casting Will Smith’s love interest in “Hitch” was not a simple black or white decision.

Eva Mendes was given the role opposite Smith because the moviemakers were worried about the public’s reaction if the part was given to a white or an African American actress, according to Smith. The actor is saying that it was feared that a black couple would have put off worldwide audiences whereas a white/African American combo would have offended viewers in the U.S.

“There’s sort of an accepted myth that if you have two black actors, a male and a female, in the lead of a romantic comedy, that people around the world don’t want to see it,” Smith told the British paper, the Birmingham Post while promoting the flick overseas. “We spend $50-something million making this movie and the studio would think that was tough on their investment. So the idea of a black actor and a white actress comes up — that’ll work around the world, but it’s a problem in the U.S.”

Eva Mendes — who is of Cuban descent — was seen as a solution because apparently, the black/Latina combination is not considered taboo.

Ironically the box office performance of Focus kinda enforced what Smith said...

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

Disappointed? High rated reviews, most audiences loved it and it made $150million on a $50million budget. what are you talking about?

reply

You do know that $150 million worldwide on a $50M production, is probably just breaking EVEN, right?

Revenues are split almost 50/50 with theater owners, and marketing costs are not included in the production budget.

Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.

reply

I guess it would have been better if it was a white guy and a black woman, or any race of woman which is more the norm in movies(SMFH)

reply

I think a WM/BW combination could've worked; "Scandal" paved the way for that. Plus, and this is going to sound crude, but I think people are more "ok" with the idea of a black woman getting screwed by a white guy than a white woman taking it from a black guy.

reply

Suriname86:
Seriously, some people still have a issue with that, but so what? Fck them. The world dosen't revolve around what the hell racist MFs think anyway.

reply

You sound dumb.

reply

Lol "propaganda"

Take a poll of 1000 black men and ask if they'd like to see a movie with a leading white actor paired romantically with a black actress.

I wonder if the 999 guys that said that's not something they'd enjoy watching would be called racists.

reply

Ask any negro female how she feels about a black man with a white girl.

reply

NEGRO!
ahhahahahahahaha

i couldn't find a "rofl" emoticon.
i'm cryin

reply

Autist Speaks:

"Negro female"? What century are you from? We call ourselves BLACK or African-American,dear.

reply

lol at all of you unevolved peasants. How is life in the 1800s, guys. You should come and join us in the 21st century. I'm a black man and couldn't care less if a black woman was paired with a white man. As a matter of a fact, one of my favorite shows/movies has a white male/black female romance; it's a little show called Star Trek --maybe, you have heard of it? Then again, maybe not. I don't think they have tv shows in the 1800s...

reply

Umm, what? Most of my black girl friends have white or asian boyfriends. My father is black and mother is white. I have a Korean girlfriend. There is no pattern here we just love who we love. my black sister has a white husband. I love him, he is my brother in law and he's awesome.

I think you just wish black men would be as racist as you. The reality is most black men don't care who black women date as long as they are loved and happy. The only black men that care are racist, and you and them should all go have a beer and circle jerk each other.

reply

Q. I wonder if inventing magical non-existent polls in that empty, pointy head of yours, and even more preposterous and hilarious, having the results of them, makes you a Grade-A babbling idiot?

A. Yes. Yes it does.

reply

Jesus Christ. So, just so I'm clear. Whenever you see an interracial couple in a film, you think it's "propaganda?" Did you actually see this movie, or did you just see black man/white woman and decide to pass? You know, I'm always hearing how "race doesn't matter," or how we are all "a part of the human race." And then I see stupid, narrow-minded posts like this one and I'm reminded that race does indeed matter......to some people.

Why is it that nobody batted an eye when Will was paired with Eva Mendes in Hitch, ten years ago? At the time, it was the way that the studios avoided casting a black female with him, therefore turning the project into a "black film." In this particular movie, as in Hitch, the races of the two leads were inconsequential, and that is really as it should be. It just doesn't matter, and those who think it does have the problem. Interracial relationships exists in the real world. Why shouldn't they be represented on film?

Sister, when I've raised hell, you'll know it!

reply

That's simple..Eva Mendes is not a White Woman.

reply

A lot more people batted eyes than you bothered noticing.

reply

Translation: YOU had a problem with it.

Sister, when I've raised hell, you'll know it!

reply

Translation: YOU are too blind to have noticed &/or dishonest to admit.

reply

My vision is very good. I'm just not bothered by interracial couplings. That's apparently YOUR issue. And you should really stop projecting your prejudices onto others.

Sister, when I've raised hell, you'll know it!

reply

Nor am I bothered with it because it's not worth bothering over it. FYI, I'm not projecting prejudices, just opinions. Why are you so defensive & offensive? Perhaps you ought to stop promoting miscegenation, to make everyone mud.

reply

@movieggek1

"Translation: YOU had a problem with it."

Ofcourse he did. Otherwise he would not even comment.

reply

Exactly.
