Thoughts on the title *Spoilers*

The word "ramble" actually has two common meanings, and I think this movie uses both of them. Most people probably think of The Rambler As a reference to the main character. Makes sense: he's on a highway going from place to place. However, it can also mean to talk for a long time without coming to a point. After watching this a couple times, I'm starting to think this is the more important meaning because it describes the movie itself.

I get that this movie is surreal and everything isn't supposed to make perfect sense. That said, it ends like it does for a reason. I think this whole story is about confused man discovering himself. The vignettes are all centered around different ways we can define ourselves: family, work, science, violence, sickness, dreams, love, etc. The Rambler confronts and rejects each theme without any kind of plan. The world around him is in control. Like a person rambling on about some topic, he's looking for a point and lacks the focus to find one. When he finally gives up looking to the outside world and finds self-contentment, symbolized by finding his cowboy song, he lets everything burn around him.

Anyways, this is how it makes sense to me. Probably a hundred ways to interpret the movie. I think it would be fun to hear some other theories...

Boo!
