Why didn't Rose just teach Eilis how to do her job ?

If Rose knew she was going to die she should have just taught Eilis how to do her job. Why bother sending her to America when there was no need?

Even if she had that idea, she would have wanted her sister to have a better life than the one she knew she would be restricted to by staying in her small culturally-inbred Irish community.

In the book Rose was a much more fleshed out character. Between her job and her Golf Club where she was a very active member she had made a nice independent life for herself. So the idea that Ireland was a stifling place with no hope for a good life didn't really hold up. Although in the film you could make an argument for it.

I assumed she didn't learn she was sick until after Eillis left.

I read an opinion somewhere that Rose did know she was going to die and she didn't want Eilis to be stuck looking after their mother for the rest of her life and that's why she sent Eilis to America.

Because it's the type of job that looks for a formal certification and not just know-how.
