Tony trapped her

Besides the fact that it made Tony look possesive and insecure, it also made Eilis's choice to go back to Brooklyn less compelling.

Of course he trapped her. He didn't want to risk losing her. She didn't know what to do, she didn't want to disappoint Tony, so she agreed. Yes he was possessive and insecure but if he really loved her then it was OK. Being insecure and possessive about someone you don't really love is a totally different situation.

No it's essentially the same situation because in both cases the person is being insecure and possessive...

Seems to me that Eilis was equally insecure when she agreed to Tony's plan. Another woman might've told him to chill out and not rush things.

Eilis was a very passive girl though wasn't she. She was sent to America, she was found a job, she was told where to live, Tony chose her, Tony decided they should get married, her mother delayed her return to America, she was given her sister's old job, her friends set her up with Jim and finally Miss Kelly forced Eilis to return to America.

At no stage did Eilis ever make a single decision about, or was at any time in control of, her own life. In that way she is not a made up film character in the usual sense at all, she is a sad little person drawn from real life.

It's ok for people to be possesive and insecure if they love the person they are doing it to? I disagree entirely. I would imagine there are many, many abusive people who feel they tick those boxes. Regardless, my main point is that it made Eilis's choice to be with Tony less of a choice and more of an obligation.

reply

Abusive men do not love the woman. Love means you care as much about the other person's good as your own good.

He may have been a little insecure, but he most certainly was not possessive. Wanting badly to marry the woman you love is not being possessive.

This is the curse nice, loving guys face. If they love with passion they're labeled something else. My advice to any woman reading this is, if you find a man that loves you like Tony loves Eillis, don't run away or question his motives. Be thankful that you're so lucky.

So lucky to become Tony's domestic drudge and bring up his ten children...?
