Why didn't they ask for a lawyer?

I know they were just kids but I knew at 14 years old to NEVER talk to the police alone, ALWAYS ask for a lawyer. Nobody, not even any of their parents thought to stop the interrogation by asking for a lawyer?

In 89' that wasn't common knowledge to kids everywhere. With the Internet and crime dramas everywhere most people understand what could happen if you don't have a lawyer present but back then it wasn't common for everyone to know.
