Which is worse? Spectre or Quantum of Solace?

Quantum of Solace is at least the worst Bond title ever

reply

TBH I disliked both.. however probably prefer Spectre just 'cause of Javier Bardem who plays a damn good villian (see also 'No Country For Old Men')

Quantum of Solace is just an overall train-wreck ..

reply

The one with Javier is Skyfall, which is actually a decent Bond movie.

Anyway, I found Spectre to be at least more memorable than Quantum of Solace, which to me was completely forgettable.

reply

ahh that's right! Skyfall with adele's vocals

I hated Quantum of Solace because Bond gets rat poisoned (?) during a goddam poker game. lol..

At least Spectre had Jaws and Christopher Lee in it.

Probably "QoS". Both are bad films with, what, ONE good scene, but "Spectre's" opening sequence is awesome and lasts for about twenty minutes. "Quantum's" one good scene is the assassination at the opera, and it's not nearly as long or as awesome as the Day Of The Dead sequence in "Spectre".

I really like Craig, I hope he makes one film that's good all the way through before he gives up the role, but if he hasn't done it yet what are the odds.

reply

Spectre, at least QoS has an amazing score.

Thomas Newman is a great composer but has done a terrible job with Skyfall and Spectre, he’s not at all suited for these films.

reply

QOS rivals Die Another Day for worst Bond flick. Spectre is somewhere in the middle of the Bond movie pack.

reply

Quantum of Solace is my least favourite Bond of all time. With the exception of the opera scene, it never feels like a Bond movie at all. Its tone is all over the place - it's a train wreck.

Spectre isn't great, but it has some lovely moments. Monica Bellucci was underused, but great, the opening sequence was terrific, and the car chase was good. Spectre was bloated, running on and on and on, and the Blofeld-Bond connection was eye-rollingly bad. But it was a middling entry otherwise.

Quantum of Solace is far, far worse.

Well said, Felix

Quantum is my least favourite Bond film.

But, for titles: Octopussy is just painfully, cringey bad.

reply

I agree, and Octopussy is one of the more forgettable Bond flicks. I always thought The Living Daylights, Tomorrow Never Dies, and of course QOS were absolutely horrible Bond names.

reply

I don't mind most of them; TLD and TND are fairly generic, forgettable names, but they'll do in a pinch. Quantum of Solace is just too needlessly intellectual, plus they turned it into a pun, and on top of it all, they invent an organisation (Quantum) which is basically SPECTRE only to have that eponymous organisation show up in the fourth Craig film.

I'd put Octopussy at the bottom for titles, then Quantum. Then, yeah, probably Living Daylights.

My biggest reason is that Quantum never feels like a Bond film. It is a generic action movie, shoehorning in real world problems (the water stuff) with very little grace. Bond doesn't behave like the Bond character throughout, more like a hard-boiled American action hero. The only sequence that feels "Bond" is the opera, a scene I did enjoy.

Not helping Quantum's case is the forgettable side characters, friends, foes, lovers, and villains are just cardboard - again, save Agent Fields in the opera sequence.

It isn't even a particularly good action movie, with shaky-cam, quick-cutting, too-close photography problems that make the action sequences difficult or impossible to appreciate. The opening car chase is a cinematographic mess.

I know this is a common way of summing this up, but, basically, it feels like a Jason Bourne movie, and not a particularly good one. It is mimicking the style, character, and devices/trappings of the Bourne sequels, and it doesn't fit Bond at all, and they aren't even doing a really good Bourne film.

I find the best Bonds are the ones that "get" the Bond world. They find a balance between the real and the fantasy, they embrace the character and the vibe without getting silly about it. From Russia with Love, Casino Royale, Skyfall, Dr. No, Goldfinger, and Licence to Kill are some of my favourite Bond pictures. Quantum doesn't work for me on really any level. I'll even take Die Another Day or Moonraker over it.

I certainly understand where, if somebody were a fan of Casino Royale in particular (and, notably, above the other Bond pictures, or exclusively (ie: they did not like/ had not seen any other Bond)) that that person would enjoy Quantum of Solace as a continuation/ending to the first film.

It is from my love of Bond as a character and as a type of story that I reject Quantum, and also, as I said, because it uses certain tropes of certain action pictures that I rather loathe.

But, if somebody didn't mind those tropes (quick-cut, giddy action sequences) and/or vastly preferred their Bond a little less "classic", it would not surprise me that they liked Quantum.

Thank you for understanding and explaining your POV instead of just going the too-frequent message board route of, "You're an idiot". Top marks, friend.
