Why isn't this higher rated

I thought it was a great movie and I know that doesn't automatically mean it should have an overall 8 or whatever, but why is it only a 6.8?

I thought it brought an end to the Daniel Craig James Bond series perfectly

reply

6.8 is a more than generous score for this. Despite the much welcomed return of the Bond tropes in addition to some good casting, the story is an absolute mess.

What was so bad about the story?

reply

To summarise, because I've discussed this to death:

1. Blofeld is written as Bond's brother.
2. Bond/Madeleine love story is contrived and doesn't flow.
3. The global surveillance plot line isn't developed.
4. Revisiting the relevance of MI6 so soon after SF is redundant and not fleshed out, rendering it pointless.

Perhaps looking at some posts on this board, or James Bond forums will give you a more detailed insight.

In Casino Royale the line was "we don't go for exploding pens anymore" and it was great that Bond was getting grittier and realistic after the cartoon Brosnan films.

In Spectre ....an exploding watch...the franchise is spiralling down hill again.

Actually, the line is from Skyfall. There wasn't Q in Casino Royale (or Quantum of Solace) at all.

reply

The line "We don't really go in for that anymore" is obviously a joke and not supposed to be taken literal. It is a wink to the audience, like the "Do I look like I give a damn" line in Casino Royale.

It's even worse. Bond led Spectre right to her, and then after rescuing her, he brings her right up to Blofeld's lair and endangers her again, and after escaping that, he leads her into danger again. Yet the roles are developed as though Bond is a protector?

The story is king.

reply

Exactly. Knowing the operation isn't over, he simply lets her go in a foreign country when he knows C's around and that he is affiliated with Blofeld/SPECTRE. Also, she does all of the saving: shooting Hinx, throwing the watch... Who's protecting who?

1. If he hadn't gone to the Hofler clinic immediately, Hinx would have beaten him there and gotten to Swann, unresisted. Heck the movie showed you that Hinx/ESB/S.P.E.C.T.R.E. watched the Altaussee feed, therefore were not led to Swann by Bond (no matter what Swann thought).

2. She was quite clear that she knew the info about L'Americain and wasn't sharing it to be sent home as Bond continued without her. Hence the "I'm coming with you.""No, you're not."..."But I want to understand what happened to my father" scene. You are actively trying to misrepresent the story, above, which undermines your point completely.

3. In London, he endeavors for Swann to stay in a safe house, apparently uncorrupted by C/etc. About as good "protection" as he could have available at the time, all tribulations considered and the clock ticking. It is Swann who doesn't want to stay.

Yet the roles are developed as though Bond is a protector?
Are they?

No. Not at all. He adventures with girl in tow, if useful, like all other developments of James Bond we've seen; he's not primarily trying to protect her but instead complete his mission. As usual. He's not some form of Bryan Mills, after all. He doesn't abscond from Crab Key because he endangers the local shell girl to proceed. Just the opposite.

Now, this is a signature gun, and that is an optical palm reader.

pking-2 has essentially corrected your misinterpretations (some deliberate perhaps). I'm curious to see how many of you respond to his comments as they make perfect sense to me.

It's the extreme!

reply

I liked it, it's no stupider than any other bond movie. This has good action, lots of classic Bond stuff like torture by the villain etc.

Why some people act like the older bond movies are such classics I don't know. He is a super hero in every movie, f every girl and gets out of the most ridicolous of pinches. This is exactly that but with better visuals.

reply

Because it was really stupid. Bond acted like after a lobotomy, so many stupid decisions. And the ending, totally unrealistic, looks like other characters got infected by his stupidity too. Worse than previous movies, considering that he had one pretty stupid moment in Skyfall too.

On the count of three...do we stand up or do we pee?

reply

I'm amazed that it is rated above a 3.

This movie was HORRIBLE.

So many issues, some have been touched on already.

(1) Blowfeld is transformed from a genius intent on world domination/greed at any cost to Bond's adopted older brother who is the "author of all his pain." It was cartoonish and embarrassing, and made both characters look weak.

(2) Going back to Vesper. In the books, Bond's one true love is his wife who Blowfeld killed, not Vesper the double agent. We already saw two films about her (one after she was already dead) and now we bring it up again and make Bond look like someone from twilight.....

(3) Bond is going to quit being Bond for a woman he just met but is "deeply connected to." Bond went from being a rookie in Casino Royale to an 'old man" 2 films later in GF, now he is ready to retire, all in 4 films.....

(4) The "C" twist we all saw a mile coming. After South AFrica was bombed immediately after that meeting, everyone in the theater saw that coming and no one really cared. After all, Spectre already had MI6 under surveillance, taking the whole thing online would be anti-climatic.

(5) Bond is Batman? Constant talk of being an orphan, living with pain, repressed childhood memories, etc. The appeal of Bond is that he is a male fantasy and loves what he does. Watching the sad, brooding Bond is a real buzzkill. Unlike SF which worked with this theme, Spectre tried to be fun and have brooding bond. Didn't work

(6) Daniel Craig is getting long in the tooth. Reminds me of Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher. A recast is required
