Unexpected gem!
I'll preface this post by saying that I don't often post on IMDB, mainly because I prefer to read others contributions and ideas of films than to put my own out there.
This film however, really struck a chord with me!
I am generally indifferent towards the majority of the "rape/revenge" horror movies out there, I often feel they are too "convenient" in the way of plot, having the victim live and have the strength to exact revenge in the most brutal ways possible, all the while being severely injured, evading detection of police forces and capture from the original abusers.
That being said, I've often enjoyed the brutality of the films, (in terms of gore really) but they have always seemed like "saw/hostel/torture porn" rehashes, and although those elements are often enjoyable for the practical effects, and "squeamish factor", I've often found the actual story as nothing more than an enabling for the horror, with no realism as to how someone could actually go through with, and get away with, the torture presented (ie; a raped victim, horribly torturing her abusers, without garnering any police attention, as well as miraculously surviving all previously endured torture) Although these movies serve their purpose in providing ample gore and satisfactory revenge for the heroine, they often fail to provide a reason for the heroines seemingly super human abilities (aside from her thirst for revenge)
"Savaged" managed to provide a fantastic side story to all the elements of a typical rape/revenge film to account for this, delivered on all the gore and brutality you would expect, and even threw in a realistic and quite emotional love story for good measure.
The acting, special effects, gore and overall story line deserve praise for being unique in a sub-genre that is always a rehash of old ideas with nothing new to offer (aside from kills)
I honestly feel its movies like this that bring new and exciting ideas to the dead/remade genre that is horror, and I hope some day soon Hollywood learns where to invest its money without tampering with a directors ideas!
