Stupid Ending? (SPOILERS)

The movie was ok, a few minor annoying tidbits, but I had word that this would "make grown men cry". I was expecting, like a lot of people, that the father would eventually die somehow probably doing some last crazy stunt like jump into the water again and never resurface. But then the shock came...

My jaw literally dropped. My eyes filled with water very quickly. "No"..I thought...that just can't be...

And in a matter of 10 seconds I'm over the whole thing and for some reason I no longer care. Why? Because they took a 2 hour film, put in a very nice shock death ending that I never saw coming, but ruined it completely by not tearing my insides out and making me bawl like a baby. Where are the tears? The last goodbyes? The emotional response over losing a child? Why cut the scene away so quickly? SHOW THE GOD DAMNED PARENTS CRYING SO I CAN FEEL THAT TOO!!! Show an after scene of other close friends finding out the news. Drag it on for god's sake.

I know it's a feel good movie but if you're gonna put that in there, at least make it a big one and not a sprinkle of surprise. I wanted a god damned hit right in the feels and all I got was "Wow...that was dumb"

So it wasn't until the movie was over that you realized how badly written it was? It became clear to me early on; the ending was just the cherry.

In American movies, they milk out a death for a while. You're just used to that. It might also be a metaphor. We lose a lot of people on this journey we call life. It took Valentin A YEAR to accept it. His heart is broken, but that won't stop him from living life. He has to power on for his daughter

It's one of those films where you have to watch it a second time to get the full view of it. It all comes to light in the end, hinting at her condition. He knows she won't live long, so he gives her the best life he can. He treats her like a princess, he spoils and cossets her, he doesn't worry about her education, because she won't need it, because she won't live to adulthood. All in all, it was pretty smart, I say.
