Cancellation proves the adult animation bubble in bursting

This year and last, has seen the cancellation and end of a lot of arguably really good adult animations: Ugly Americans, The Cleveland Show, Futurama, Life and Times of Tim and many more.

And even Adult Swim has noticeably shifted its attention from animations to live actions.

What's left are the classic 'The Simpsons' winning formula, middle class family dysfunction: Family Guy, American Dad, Bob's Burgers and South Park, which survives through nostalgia and an almost manic pursuit of relevance.

Gone are the heydays of quirky dramedy animations and alternative humour that found success in the past without being zany and spontaneous satires of modern life such like: Daria, King of the Hill, The Maxx, Home Movies.

This is one of the smartest, most spiritual and complex animations I've watched in years and that's exactly why it failed. When we see animation, we see an excuse to devolve in arbitrary jokes and suspending the laws of physics. We no longer see it as an alternative medium, but just a mode of humour.

If a show like Out There can't get renewed then I think it's really the end of era in animation.

it was really bland and none of the plot was very original. I liked the designs but the show was boring.

Out of all the ones you listed the only i even watch anymore are American Dad, Futurama, and South Park. Another that was canceled was "Unsupervised". Which i thought was amazing. If you haven't seen it check it out.

I really enjoyed this show. I just remembered it.

I blame part of the reason good shows (live/animation) get canceled now days is Netflix. Too many people just say theyll wait for it to be there and check it out. Which results in good shows being cancelled before they ever get a chance to gain a audience.

Im just wondering when a non-comedy centric adult animated series will ever be produced again. You only brought up The Maxx, but neglect to mention other shows like Spawn, Aeon Flux, Spicy City, or Invasion America. Most adult animated shows nowadays are just rehashes of previous comedy shows. I'm hoping the new Samurai Jack season changes this.
